Biscuits and Breezers
Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be going over NHL and EIHL news, some junior scores and a look into what the week has in store for hockey! Well I think today we will start off with some NHL news considering the pre-season is well underway and the NHL regular season it just around the corner. Starting off, I would just like to say my sincerest condolences towards Sidney Crosby and his family after the passing of his grandmother last Saturday. He has returned home to attend her funeral and spend time with his family. He missed the preseason game against Minnesota and but did return for their last preseason game. Once again my sincerest condolences to Crosby and his family. David Booth, of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has fractured his foot and can join his injured team mates considering David Clarkson has a fractured orbital bone, Henrik Tallinder has a separated shoulder, and Cody Franson has been sidelined until the swelling in his bruised knee goes down. Ducks forward Dany Heatley will be out at least a week due to a groin injury and Winnipeg Jets forward TJ Galiardi has had laser eye surgery to repair damage after taking a puck to the face near his left eye in practice. Beau Bennett of the Pittsburgh Penguins will also be sidelined for at least 6 weeks due to a lower body injury sustained during last Friday morning's practice. Jordan Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes will be out at least 3-4 months after having surgery to repair the broken fibula in his right leg that he sustained in the pre-season game against Buffalo last Tuesday.

Watch this beauty move pulled by Grigorenko!!
Now for some EIHL news! Sheffield Steelers defenseman Rod Sarich has fractured a bone in his leg and is expected to be out from 2-6 weeks. His leg was broken in the game against Belfast this past weekend. Edinburgh Capitals' Rilley Emmerson's ban has been reduced to only 3 games following the injury Kevin Phillips of the Belfast Giants sustained after a boarding penalty by Emmerson. The ban was originally 10 games along with a fine for the team but the since there was insufficient video footage and there was a reevaluation of Phillips' injuries, the ban has been reduced 7 games. The 1000 pound fine for Edinburgh will still remain in place. With that, the news for this week in the EIHL has been concluded!
We have now come to the time for some junior hockey news! After a few tough weeks of competition in the WSHL, MnJHL and the NA3HL, here are the standings:
Reed is 5 ft 7 in, 154 lbs, and is from Poway, California, USA. In the 2013-2014 season, he had 2.51 Goals Against Average in 25 games played paired with a .922 save percentage. I think that Reed is a great goaltender due to the fact that he never backs down from any challenge. He is always trying to put forth his best game possible and makes the best out of stressful games. I was able to watch him on Friday when he played the Missoula Maulers of the WSHL and quite frankly I was very impressed with his tenacity in the net. Nothing will get rid of the confidence he has when he is in the cage. Kinsey fills the net very well and is always on top of what is going on outside of the goal. He is constantly keeping watch of the players and is perceiving each person's type of play. Reed is very technical when he is on the ice and has absolutely great butterflies. He is great at keeping track of the puck all throughout the game and is also very good at performing under intense stressful situations. He doesn't crumble when things get tough, instead he stands tall and proud of the team and himself. Best of luck Reed with the Butte Cobras and your future hockey career!
We have now come to the time for some junior hockey news! After a few tough weeks of competition in the WSHL, MnJHL and the NA3HL, here are the standings:
I tried to screenshot the standings for you all but the size wouldn't fit into frame. So here are some team standings:
WSHL Leaders: Idaho Junior Steelheads at 13 points, Southern Oregon Spartans at 13, and Colorado RoughRiders at 10.
NA3HL Leaders: Toledo Cherokee at 13 points, Granite City Lumberjacks at 12 points, and Topeka and Southern Tier are tied at 10
MnJHL Leaders: Dells Ducks at 18 points, Rochester Ice Hawks at 10 points, and Forest Lake Lakers at 10 points
So a few more news objectives, the Long Beach Bombers have named their captains for the season! Veteran Mason Siebe will wear the "C" and Swedish defensemen Marcus Sundell and Lukas Lindquist will wear the "A"s. There are many home openers this weekend so I will try to be keeping track of all of them since this will officially get everyone on the standings and everybody will have at least 2 games under their belt seeing that there are many team who have still yet to play any games. Let's get this season underway!!
Now for the "Players of Today" segement of the blog! Yes I am bringing this back because I love it and I also know you guys love it! It has been absent for a while due to the site switching but now it is back from it's hiatus! For the Goalie pick we have Butte Cobras goaltender Reed Kinsey. For the Prospect pick we have Winnipeg Jets prospect and Halifax Mooseheads forward Nikolaj Ehelrs. For the European pick we have Everett Silvertips forward Ivan Nikolishin.
Nikolaj is 5 ft 11 in, 176 lbs, and is from Aalborg, Denmark. In the 2013-2014 season, he had 49 goals in 63 games played, 55 assists, 104 TPs, 51 PIMs, and a +/- of 65. In the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Ehlers was drafted to the Winnipeg Jets 9th overall in the 1st round. When you watch Nikolaj play, you will be immediately stunned yet at the same time you will know that this skater has the NHL in his future. He plays an absolutely huge game and can score out of almost nothing. Nikolaj can bust past almost any defensive line to beat the opposing goaltender to keep a constant and reliable flow of points for his team. One of the things that I really admire about Ehlers' game is that he pairs a huge aggressive game with out of this world speed. It's almost as if he is wearing rockets instead of skates at times! Nikolaj is great at creating scoring chances because of his persistence with rushing the puck and taking advantage of the open ice. He doesn't crack under pressure and has outstanding stickhandling skills. To add to the list of remarkable things, he has an incredible slapshot. You are going to want to keep track of Nikolaj because when he breaks into the NHL, he will be unstoppable. Good luck Nikolaj with the Halifax Mooseheads and your future hockey career!

Ivan is 5 ft 9 in, 170 lbs, and is from Moscow, Russia. During the 2013-2014 season, he had 18 goals in 72 games played, 41 assists, 59 TPs, a +/- of -4, and 16 PIMs. Ivan is a great player because he has everything in line to be a phenomenal player but instead of venturing solo into the sport, he is definitely there for the team. He is great at playing both ends of the ice and is a very versatile player for any team to have. He is a very large forward that brings a huge game to the ice but at the same his defensive game is very, very strong. Ivan plays the ice like he owns it and is never afraid to back down from a challenge. Even though his game is fueled by aggression and confidence, Ivan plays a very clean game. He isn't out there to send someone to the hospital and he isn't out there to see the ice turn red. He executes every play very precise and accurately and it is very obvious that he has a very high hockey IQ. He will be great for upper level teams as he continues to advance because he is an extremely hard worker and will strive to any goal he sets. Good luck Ivan with the Silvertips and your future hockey career!
