Biscuits
and Breezers
Welcome back to Biscuits
and Breezers! This week is all about the Stanley Cup Semi Finals. After a sad
end to the finals with the Penguins being eliminated in Game 6 with a score of
1-5, the Flyers are now going up against the New Jersey Devils. The series is
tied currently at 1-1. We will see the result after game 3 in New Jersey. The Devils hope that Zach Parise, Ilya
Kovalchuk, and Adam Larsson can lift past the Flyers and move on to the Finals.
Kovalchuk is back playing with the
Devils after being out for Game 2 with a herniated disk in his lower back and
practicing on Thursday’s practice, his injury is limiting him to when and how
aggressive he can be. He appears to be at full strength with scoring a goal
12:53 in the first period as a wrist shot at 17.5 feet.
The next series that
we’ll review is the Predators vs. Coyotes.
Pekka Rinne, this writer feels, shown bright in Game 3 by shutting out
the Coyotes 2-0 with a SV% of 1.00! That’s incredible! To add to the pile, he made 32 saves to top
it off! Goals were made by Mike Fisher and David Legwand, turning out to be the
only goals made in the game! Way to go Preds and way to represent Finland and
Nashville Pekka Rinne! Hopefully the Predators will storm into the Finals and
claim the Cup, since the last time the Preds took home the Cup was let’s
see….NEVER!! Hopefully they will bring it to Nashville.
In the next episode of
Biscuits and Breezers, we will talk about the Washington vs. New York series
and the St. Louis vs. Los Angeles. For now, let us move on to the new segment
called “Players of Today”. Our first choice of the Juniors/minors categories is
Missoula Maulers goalie McKinlee Baum of the AWHL Tier 3 Junior hockey, Next
categorie of the European League is Viktor Arvidsson from the Skelleftea AIK in
the Elitserien, but last but not least, The Majors NHL player and Pittsburgh
Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby.
The Goalie pick for this week is McKinlee Baum from the
Missoula Maulers of the AWHL. McKinlee is 5ft 10in and weighs 159lbs; he has a
2.12 GAA and a SVS% of .932! That is better than some of the goalies in the NHL
and the upper leagues! He previously played with the Spokane Braves of the
KIJHL in 2009-2011. McKinlee went with the Braves to the playoffs in the
2009-2010 season. His save percentage has increased wonderfully from a .852
starting with the Braves in 2009 to a .932 in 2012. Hopefully, he will keep
improving and move onto higher goaltending. Good luck and great job Mckinlee!
The European Pick for this week is Viktor Arvidsson form the
Swedish hockey league Elitserien on the team Skelleftea AIK. He is a left wing
from Kusmark, Sweden who is 5ft 9ins and 168lbs. Viktor is the ghost of this
team and isn’t a major chirper. He seems to not get very chippy most games. He
has 25 goals in 43 games played, 17 assists, 42 TPs, and 18 PIMs in the
2011-2012 season. I picked Viktor because he needs to be recognized, but then
again a lot of young players need to be recognized for their efforts. For being
a small winger with speed on his side and techniques stacking up, Viktor has
high potential for getting a top cheese or even being a sniper. Viktor
Arvidsson is definitely not a bender in my mind. Good luck in your future
hockey career Viktor!
The NHL player pick is, in my opinion, the best NHL
player…SIDNEY CROSBY! I think he is the best because he has so much
determination for the game he wants to keep improving. Also, for the fact that
he has broken 13 records in total, 12 of them being in the NHL and in the time
span of 7 years. Shooting pucks into the family’s dryer at the age of 3 and
teaching himself how to play hockey is what helped him a lot I think. He is 5ft
11in, Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, a forward, drafted 1st
round 1st overall in 2005, and weighs 200lbs. He has 8 goals in 22 games played, 29 assists,
a +/- of 15, 14 PIMs, 37 points, 2 power play goals, 0 shorthanded goals, 75
shots on the goal, 10.5 S%, and 3 game
winning goals in the 2011-2012 season. That is impressive for someone who was
out 40 regular season games with a concussion and reoccurring concussion-like
symptoms. Being from Halifax, Nova
Scotia, Canada, he went on to the Canadian Olympic team in 2010. He scored the winning
goal against the USA to claim the gold for Canada. Crosby also attended Shattuck-St. Mary’s
Boarding school in Fairbault, Minnesota during his final years of high school
with Jack Johnson to escape Canada for a while and experience America. Also, he
lived with Mario Lemieux for his first years after being drafted to the
Penguins. During the Penguins final playing games, there was a major rise in
“Crosby Haters.” During the home games in Philadelphia in the Cup
Quarterfinals, Flyers fans chanted “You can’t stop us Crosby!” and made posters
that said things such as “Crybaby Crosby”. I disagree with these fans manly
because… they are WRONG! Sidney Crosby is not only the youngest player to raise
the Cup at 21 years, 10 months, and 5 days, but he is the youngest player in
the history of the NHL to become Captain of a team at 19 years, 9 months, and
24 days. Sidney Crosby has broken over 13 records alone. I would like to see someone
on the Flyers to break that many records and become the heartbeat of the NHL. Keep on rocking and bringing home the gold
Sidney! Don’t listen to the doubters. Sid the kid is amazing!
