Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be talking about the development camps for the NHL teams and the many signings of this years draft picks. Starting off with the development camp. In a junior/minor hockey team, a family is created through rough times and amazing times where everyone has your back. In an NHL team, a family is created through all of those things and through stress, anxiety, and from close-knit relationships where you have to watch out for each other. This is what development camps are for. To bring the prospects together and try to bond them into a family before they step onto the ice for their first NHL game. Each team has their own way of team bonding. For example, Pittsburgh had the notorious paintball war, Dallas had the skeet shooting competition, Phoenix climbed Camelback Mountain, Philadelphia had the Trial on the Isle, and Columbus trained with the military one day. When you boil it all down, the tougher and more challenging the work outs are, the greater the rewards are and a closer family is born. The closer a team is, the success rate of the team is that much greater. Then come the scrimmages at the end of the camp. That is the moment when you face not only your friends, but your enemies. It shows what you are going to be playing with.

Now we will discuss many prospects being signed. In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, every single team had a plan for each one of the young men they drafted. Recently, some of the teams are putting these plans in progress by signing some young key players to entry-level contracts. The Washington Capitals have signed first round pick Filip Forsberg to a 3 year deal, where if he plays in the NHL he will earn $832,500 and if he plays in the AHL $70,000. The Buffalo Sabres have signed first round pick Zemgus Girgensons to a 3 year contract. Also the Anaheim Ducks have signed first round pick Hampus Lindholm to the 3 year entry-level contract. Now, some players still have contracts from their previous teams. For example, Forsberg is playing his last year with his Leksand team and Lindholm still has a season with the Rogle BK team. I am excited to see these guys step on NHL ice for the first time. It will be interesting and a new learning experience for them. Good luck guys!

Here we have come to the "Players of Today". For the European pick we have Luleå Elitserien right/left wing Konstantin Komarek. For the Prospect/Goalie pick we have 2012 NHL Entry Draft Chicago Blackhawks 7th round 191st overall pick Victoriaville Tigres goalie Brandon Whitney. For the NHL player we have Blackhawks center Patrick Kane.

Starting off with the European player. Konstantin is 6ft. 0in, 187lbs, and is from Wien, Austria. In his 2011-2012 season, he had 2 goals in 45 games played, 3 assists, 5 TPs, 4 PIMs, and a +/- of -1. It looks like he is playing for the EC Salzburg team in the 2012-2013 season. Konstantin has great skills on the ice and his passes are smooth and flow together. He has great on-ice vision and plays every shift to the fullest. Good luck Konstantin playing in Austria and in your future hockey career!

Next, we have the Prospect/Goalie pick. Brandon is 6ft. 5in, 192lbs, and is from Centreville, Nova Scotia, Canada. In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Brandon was picked in the 7th round, 191st overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. In the 2011-2012 season, Brandon had 36 games played, 2.74 goals against average, and a save percentage of .896 with the Victoriaville Tigres in the QMJHL. He will be playing with the Tigres for the 2012-2013 season. With Brandon being 6ft.5in and 192lbs, he protects the net well, and has great butterflies. He reminds me of Pekka Rinne from the Nashville Predators with his size and techniques. Good Luck Brandon with the Tigres and the Blackhawks and in your future hockey career!

Lastly, we have the NHL player. Patrick Kane is 5ft. 11in, 181lbs, and is from Buffalo, New York, USA. He was drafted 1st round 1st overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. His junior team was the Detroit Honeybaked in the MWEHL and the London Knights in the OHL. Patrick has played many times for the United States in the Olympics and scored the Stanley Cup  overtime game winning goal in 2010. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 23 goals in 82 games played, 43 assists, 66 TPs, a +/- of 7, 40 PIMs, 4 power play goals, 0 shorthanded goals, 5 game winning goals, 253 shots on goal, and a S% of 9.1. He has great passes, on-ice vision, and will slip through defenseman to make a goal. Good luck in your future NHL career!

Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
