Biscuits and Breezers' Stanley Cup Final Report
LA KINGS' CROWNING GLORY
The LA Kings take the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history! Winning Game 6, 6-1, the Kings are celebrating in style with champagne and great memories. Jonathan Quick was the winner of the Conn Smythe trophy and Dustin Brown was handed the cup by Gary Bettman, commissioner of the NHL. Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Matt Greene, and Trevor Lewis all contributed goals with Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, and Trevor Lewis all making goals on Steve Bernier's 5 and 10 minute penalties. Dustin Brown, we saw tonight, is the perfect fit for a captain. He had to be big to win this game and he was gigantic having 2 assists and 1 goal. Drew Doughty, Mike Richards, Anze Kopitar, Dwight King, and Jarret Stoll all had assists and Jonathan Quick had 17 saves and a save percentage of .944. In my opinion, it was a bad idea when the Devils pulled Brodeur towards the end of the game because that just gave an easier opportunity of scoring to a team who was going to score anyway! Making goals in the first, second, and third periods, the Kings definitely knew they were going to win the Cup. In almost every Stanley Cup Final game, the first team to score usually wins the cup. This game is proof that the statement is true.
On power plays, the Kings were a beast! In the post/playoff season, the Kings were the top leaders in power play goals. Working like a well oiled machine, they connected with each other and made things happen. As the great coach Herb Brooks once said, " Great moments are born from great opportunities." The Kings took that to heart, by making the most of every minute and shift they had on the ice. He also said, "This is your moment. You're mant to be here." Every member, player, staff, coach, and fan fit this description. Then what Al Michaels said at the 1980 Winter Olympics with the USA against the Soviet Union fit the mood at Staples Center," Five seconds left in the game. Do you believe in miracles? YES!" Yes we do. Now, it would be better if Sidney Crosby and Geno were hoisting the cup in Consol Energy Center, but that is just my opinion.
The Devils looked very sad and disappointed when the buzzer rang at the end of the third period. Grizzled veteran Martin Brodeur had a special moment with "rookie" goaltender Jonathan Quick exachanging encouraging and private words and a special hug. Brodeur knows how special it is to win the Stanley Cup, being a three time winner himself. Watching the game last night, many of the players on the last shift on the ice in the third period basically knew that they could never catch up to the Kings in the last 5 minutes and started to wind down. You have to give credit to the Devils throughout the Finals forcing a Game 6 and playing some of the best offense. Great job to the Devils for trying their absolute hardest and giving it their all. *Round of applause* Great job and warmest congrats to the LA Kings for winning their first Stanley Cup!!!
