Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! I am sorry I haven't posted in a while, I have been terribly busy but I promise I am back on track now! Also the Meet your Maulers series is almost over, only about 3 guys left and it is back to normal on this blog. I have missed you guys and  I am so thankful every one of you has kept sticking with me through all of this craziness! Truly you are the best audience out there!

Moving on, today we will be talking about a junior hockey tragedy that happened over Thanksgiving, the many NHL injuries lately, 3 injury hearings, and Lundqvist's extension with the Rangers.

So far, there have been about 6 serious injuries all throughout the league but the main players effected would be Philly's Vincent Lecavalier, Boston's Chris Kelly, Loui Eriksson, Adam McQuaid  and Johnny Boychuk, Vancouver's Alexander Burrows, New York's Marc Staal, Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, and Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik. Recent signer to the Philadelphia Flyers, Vincent Lecavalier, will be out 3-4 weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his lower back. He practiced in Dallas and his back tightened and progressively became more sore as the day went on. The team had Vincent X-rayed in Dallas and found an abnormality, so they flew him back up to Philly on Sunday for an MRI from the team's doctors. In that MRI they found the fracture. It is reported that he will rest for a few days and then start on his rehab when some of the soreness recedes. Apparently the injury occurred during the third period of the Nashville Predators game on November 30th. Bruins' forward Chris Kelly has suffered a fractured right fibula during the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He will be out 4-6 weeks  and has been placed on long-term injury reserve. Also during that game Loui Eriksson was given a concussion from Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik when Orpik knocked him to the ice with a massive check. His fellow team mates Adam McQuaid is on injury reserve with a lower body injury and Johnny Boychuk us expected to be out a week with back spasms after being taken off the ice on a stretcher and sent to a hospital after a huge hit from Max Pacioretty. Next, Vancouver's Alexander Burrows will be out a month from taking a puck to the face in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. He underwent surgery earlier this month to repair his fractured jaw. Now we have New York's very own Staal brother. Marc Staal is suspected to have a concussion after taking a shoulder check to the chin from the Reid Boucher. Apparently he wasn't feeling quite right after the game. He is reportedly suffering from concussion-like symptoms and is being treated for neck issues. Next, we have Detroit's star player and captain Henrik Zetterberg side lined. He will be out at least 2 weeks with back injury. Datsyuk will be out as well with a concussion and is listed as day-to-day. Lastly we have Brooks Orpik. After being taken down and beaten to the ice by Boston's Shawn Thornton and 1 stretcher ride later, Orpik has been placed on injured reserve with a concussion. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital immediately after the incident. So far it is unknown how long he will out. Best of luck to all of you, best wishes, and get well soon!

Next off we have three game hearings that involve suspensions. First is Pittsburgh Penguins winger James Neal. Neal will be out 5 games without pay for kneeing Bruins forward Brad Marchand during the game on December 7th. Neal will be penalized $128,205.15 based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement and his average salary. The money he forfeits goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Now we have Shawn Thornton. Shawn will have an in-person hearing on a to-be-determined date for his attack on Brooks Orpik.  He was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing required by the C.B.A. for any suspension that could possibly exceed 5 games. Thornton was also assessed a match penalty. Lastly we have Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf. He will have a safety hearing for his hit on Boston Bruins' Kevan Miller during Sunday's game where he hit him in the back near the boards on Boston's end of the ice. This hearing will occur on Tuesday (today.)

Now we have the New York Rangers' star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist with a contract extension. In this last week, he has signed an extension worth $59.5 million over 7 seasons. He would have been an unrestricted free agent at the end of this current season and now this new contract will potentially hold him in New York until the end of his career which could be the 2020-2021 season. Hopefully during that time frame we will see him win a Stanley Cup or even 2! Congratulations on the extension Henrik!

Lastly we have a Thanksgiving catastrophe. Traveling to a youth hockey tournament, the Stryker family (60 y.o. Rebecca Simpson Stryker, 56 y.o. James Lee Stryker,  16 y.o. twins Travis and Austin Stryker) was involved in a head on collision. The youth tournament they were headed to was the Silver Stick Regional event in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Three members of the family were killed when the crash happened in a remote area of northern Arizona. The three members killed were Rebecca, James, and Travis. Austin is seriously injured and is hospitalized in Flagstaff, Arizona. Apparently, the car that hit them crossed the center line of the road and collided with another car before hitting the Strykers. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and condolences for their lost loved ones. Since the members were from the Dallas area, the Dallas Junior Hockey Association have set up a fund where all proceeds go directly to Austin and Stephanie to cover the costs of accident and the future expenses. Here is the link go to: http://www.djha.com/ and here is the memorial page: https://www.facebook.com/Strykermemorial. This is a tragic event to happen and is very, very sad to hear about. Again, thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

We have come to the "Players of Today" segment of our blog! For the Junior pick we have Southern Oregon Spartans forward Jason Henry. For the Goalie pick we have Vancouver Canucks tendy Eddie Lack. For the European pick we have Cheyenne Stampede defenseman/forward Jimmie Kotilainen. I am adding a new aspect to the Players of Today by adding a picture of the players underneath their review. I know I should have done this a while ago but I couldn't decide if I should or not. I hope you guys like it!

Jason is 5 ft 8 in, 155 lbs, and is from Alpena, Michigan. He is playing for the Southern Oregon Spartans in the WSHL currently. I couldn't find his stats for the 2012-2013 season, but his current stats are 7 goals in 21 games played, 4 assists, 11 TPs, 2 PIMs, 3 power play goals, 1 power play assist, and 1 game winning goal. I love to watch Jason play because he is so unique in what he does that is seems like there is always something new he pulls out of his bag of skills. I also greatly enjoy watching he and his brother Ben play together. Whenever they  are out on the ice together, you know within the period there is going to be a goal scored. They compliment each other fantastically. Jason is great with the puck, he has quick skates, and is amazing at rushing the puck while keeping it in his possession at the same time. He has silky mitts but at the same time can be very physical. In a nutshell, Jason is a skilled forward with the talents of an experienced and aggressive blue liner. If you ever have a chance to check he and/or his brother out, definitely take that chance. Good luck Jason with the Spartans and with your future hockey career!

Jimmie is 6 ft 0 in, 170 lbs, and is from Oxleosund, Sweden. For the most part he played with the Cheyenne Stampede last season. During that season he had 5 goals in 14 games played 7 assists, 12 TPs, and 10 PIMs. He was called up by the Wenatchee Wild during the start of the 2013-2014, but was sent back down to Cheyenne after two games. Personally, I highly enjoy watching him play because he is a very, very talented defenseman. He has his offensive talents such as goal scoring, quick skates, his rushing abilities, and his very high passing abilities but then he has his great defensive skills such as always circling the action, closing holes in plays, and being physically intimidating. He is a great guy to watch to pick up skills or to learn how to control as much of the shift as you can. Jimmie has great leadership capabilities on and off the ice and is one of those players that you know will go far. Good luck Jimmie with the Stampede and your future hockey career!

Eddie is 6 ft 5 in, 187 lbs, and is from Norrtalje, Sweden. He was never drafted, but is finally signed with the Vancouver Canucks. He played with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL last season and he had 7 wins in 13 games played, 4 losses, 1 tie, 1 overtime loss, 1 shut out, 38 goals against, 376 shots against, save percentage of .899, 3 goals against average, and 760 minutes played. Eddie is possibly one of my favorite goaltenders of all time and is a very talented one at that. He is known as "The Stork" because of his long stork-like legs that help in incredibly tight situations. I not only admire him for his impressive statistics, but his work ethic and determination are out of this world. Never getting drafted, Lack went from his home in Sweden to being one of Vancouver's most crucial elements. There is nothing that will stop him from achieving his goal and that is one quality that stands out above the rest. He has great butterflies, glove catches, and is a leader on and off the ice. Hopefully we will see more of him in the cage in the future with his new contract. He lightens the team with his humor but keeps them serious in tight spots. Good luck Eddie with the Canucks and your future NHL career!

Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
