Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be discussing the many injuries in the NHL lately,  Marty Biron's retirement, Semyon Varlamov's arrest, and a Glacier Nationals player in critical condition. First off we will be talking about Semyon Varlamov. On Thursday, Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov briefly appeared in court after turning himself in on Wednesday night to the Denver police for assault charges declared by his girlfriend Evgeniya Vavrinyuk. He spent the night in jail Wednesday night then the next day he was told by Denver County Judge Claudia Jordan that he could be released if he posted a $5,000 bond, signed a waiver saying that he couldn't drink, possess firearms, and if he decided to flee when he traveled with the team he would would be sent back to Colorado. Semyon was arrested for suspicion of second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault. Vavrinyuk had been dating Varlamov for a year and has been assaulted on four separate occasions. Apparently he has a very bad drinking problem and this was one case that followed excessive drinking. Evgeniya reportedly went home after the assault and found all of her stuff thrown into the hallway and Varlamov had cut off her bank account. The assault consisted of Varlamov kicking Evgeniya in the chest, knocking her down, then stomping on her chest as she lay on her apartment floor. He also dragged her by the hair and accusedly said he would have beaten her more if they were back in Russia. In my opinion the Avalanche's organization needs to be taking this more seriously. Domestic violence isn't something to brush off. I hope that in the end there will be a conclusion that is equally distributed to both parties.

Next off we will be talking about a junior hockey player. Paul Kinder is the team captain of the Glacier Nationals in the AWHL, an official for youth hockey and adults, volunteers as a youth coach, and is a major part around his local rink. He was the league's winner of the American West Hockey League's Community Service Award last season. Kinder also participates in Habitat for Humanity and local school visits. He started exhibiting signs of what look liked the flu but it progressed to bilateral Pneumonia. He is currently on a ventilator. His kidneys are barely keeping up and he is fighting a serious blood infection. I sincerely hope he gets well soon and is back on the ice as quickly as he can. It is never good to hear of a player, or anyone for that matter, fighting a disease like this and having to fight to keep moving on. Best wishes from S.H. Rauvola! Get well soon!

There have been many injuries up in the NHL lately and we are going to discuss those of Cam Ward, Pekka Rinne, Josh Harding, and Jakob Silfverberg. Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward will miss 3-4 weeks because of a lower body injury forcing him to leave the game versus Minnesota. Josh Harding was also pulled during the same game due to a lower body injury as well. Keeping with the tendy theme, Pekka Rinne will miss at least 4 weeks due to spontaneous hip arthroscopic surgery to clean out a bacterial infection. Rinne underwent hip surgery back in May of this year that was deemed as a success. After he returned to Nashville from a game in Minnesota he was experiencing a fever, soreness to his hip, and had a noticeable limp. Jakob Silfverberg will be out 4-6 weeks since sustaining a broken hand in the game against the Ottawa Senators. He was slashed midway through the third. Hopefully they all heal quickly and have a speedy recovery period.

Last thing before we reach the "Players of Today" segment, I just would like to shout out Martin Biron from the New York Rangers. After 16 seasons in the league veteran goaltender has announced his retirement after a week of being placed on waivers. He has been backup to Henrik Lundqvist since the 2010-2011 season. Biron said, "I know I made the right decision, this has been brewing in my mind for a while, even before the waivers. When I left for camp this year I figured I'd play it by ear, after a month more and more I had those feelings (about retiring)." Best of luck with the rest of your life and you will be greatly missed! Biron was one of my personal favorite goaltenders and was a great partner to Lundqvist.

Now we have come to the "Players of Today"! For the prospect pick we have Quebec Remparts left wing Anthony Duclair. For the junior pick we have Victoria Grizzlies triplet line of the Fitzgerald triplets. For the European pick we have Visby/Roma defenseman and right wing Andreas Olofsson.

Anthony is 5 ft 11 in, 176 lbs, and is from Laval, Quebec, Canada. In the 2012-2013 season, he had 20 goals in 55 games played, 30 assists, 50 TPs, 22 PIMs, and a +/- of 23. He was drafted 80th overall in the 3rd round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Rangers. Anthony is an incredible goal scorer and is definitely some one to watch out on the ice. He connects very well with his team mates and is great with his use of ice time. He has great on ice vision and is has good stickhandling skills. If he does make it on to the Rangers roster in the near future he will be a great asset to their offensive power and will be one of those young players that will take after the great scoring leaders. Hopefully we will see him up in the big leagues soon! Good luck Anthony with the Remparts and your future hockey career!

I am really excited to review the Fitzgerald triplets because they are major beauts! They are triplets that make up an entire line for the Victoria Grizzlies in the BCHL. Leo is 5 ft 4 in, 119 lbs, and is from Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada. Gerry is 5 ft 6 in, 134 lbs, and Myles is 5 ft 4 in, 119 lbs. In the 2012-2013 the had a combined 89 goals, 84 assists, 173 TPs, and 75 PIMs. These boys are incredible for the fact that they can rack up as many points as they do on the same team and that they are all great hockey players. Also, they have all committed to Bemidji State University for the 2014-2015 season. They combine skill, IQ, and amazing hockey sense to make for outstanding plays and incredible games. It would be amazing to just sit down and talk with them about their experiences out on the ice and the personal side of their story. I am excited to watch them play for Bemidji and see how they handle college hockey! Good luck Leo, Gerry, and Myles with the Grizzlies, and your future hockey career!

Andreas is 6 ft 2 in, 176 lbs, and is from Gothem, Sweden. In the 2012-2013 season, he had 2 goals in 39 games played, 4 assists, 6 TPs, 6 PIMs, and has a +/- of 4. I watched him play for the Quake in the 2011-2012 season back when they were in the NORPAC and this guy was an absolute boss! 31 TPs in 26 games played and huge, and I mean huge, physical plays. He is a huge component on the ice and a great player. His hand-eye coordination is spot on and has great skates. I would love to see Andreas play again because he is a beauty to watch just for his style of play and how he uses his hockey smarts to get the puck where it needs to go. I can definitely see him moving up in the leagues and playing somewhere in the Swedish pros or a high level in the US, possibly Canada. Good luck Andreas with Visby/Roma and your future hockey career!

Thanks for reading another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Every blog will be filled with updated hockey news, players reviews, and much more! Until next time remember, don't get your breezers in a bunch because hockey is always around the corner. Remember, it's always a great day for hockey and it's a lifestyle not just a sport!

Enjoy this video of Pascal Dupuis of the Pittsburgh Penguins pull out his own tooth! He is mic'd so you can really understand what went on! This proves hockey players are, in my opinion, the toughest athletes out there. Pull out their own teeth and are back playing a couple of minutes later.

Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
