Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be talking about Sweden's potential hockey player-population growth, the Missoula Maulers' home opener, and a player's move back home. Starting off with Sweden. During the regular NHL season, many players are come from the grand Scandinavian country of Sweden to play over in North America. Now with the lockout many players from Sverige are stuck about where to play this season. Well now things are turning around. The Elitserien is now accepting, though very limited, spots in their league. So potentially players such as Henrik Lundqvist, Erik Karlsson, and Loui Eriksson could go back to the league that made their dreams come true. To all my Swedish fans out there, Vad tycker ni om det här? Ska du vara glada att se din favorit NHLers leker med dina pojkar? I mean I would be. Personally, if I could travel to Sweden right now I would because Sweden is just that awesome! Well if things are going to go the way they are planned out to be, there could potentially be a flood of NHL players in the Swedish leagues.

Next thing we are going to talk about goes along with my AWHL team of the month. The Missoula Maulers are having their home opener on the 5th of October. That is 3 days away. I have been in contact with a few of the guys on the team and it seems that things are going quite well. They played the Yellowstone Quake on the 28th and 29th of September and have a record now of 1-1-0. Which is pretty good. They lost 6-3 the first game of the season and won on the 29th 4-3. Maulers forward Matt Chamberlain got in his first career fight. Way to go beaut! Things are getting off to a rolling start and they could possibly have the season they had last year. I also want to give a shout out to Bob's Hockey Shop in Missoula, Montana for helping me with my equipment needs! Go check them out, you will definitely be outfitted with the best quality and highest standard equipment! Thanks! Back to what I was talking about. The boys are playing outstanding already with Brett Mathews scoring a majority of the goals, Viktor Steenson being the amazing Vaxjo Viking scoring and assisting up a storm, Donovan Mattfeldt defending the blue line to the exact point, and Gabe Whiteman-Jones leading the pack in goal scoring. So in point, make sure to be at Glacier Ice Rink on October 5th at 7:30pm so you can see this incredible group of guys play the puck on home ice! I will definitely be trying my best to go there so make sure you can too! Hopefully I will see you all there! Oh one more thing, shout out to one of the biggest stars on the Maulers last year, Ian Johnson. I want to tell you good luck in Wyoming this year! This beaut has star potential and is working his way up playing with the Cheyenne Stampede in the WSHL. Ian is definitely one of the best defenseman I have seen. If you haven't seen him play you need to because this kid can't be missed. If I was a scout, he would be one of the top prospects on my list. Good Luck Ian!

Now we move back to Sweden. The Division 1 Botkyrka HC team has received "Swedish Sensation" defenseman Oscar Bjorkander. Last year with the Maulers, he had his best year in points at 25 compared to 11 in the 2011 season. That is 14 points more. Hopefully he can lift his team like he did last year and prevail to become one of the most known defenseman in the small town of Missoula, Montana. Making the move from Visby to Stockholm, Oscar is definitely ready for the 2012-2013 season. Coming certainly from me and all of us in "the zoo" and associated with the Glacier Ice Rink, best of luck to you Oscar! You will always be the only Swedish Sensation and definitely brought our hockey team to a higher level of playing. Thank you! Good luck Oscar with your 2012-2013 season and to any scouts out there reading this, Oscar Bjorkander should definitely be looked at if he isn't already because his defenseman skills are out of this world! Good luck beaut!

It's time for the "Players of Today"! For the Junior pick we have Wenatchee Wild defenseman Brendan Vetter. For the NHL player we have Philadelphia Flyers right wing Scott Hartnell. For the European pick we have Jokerit SM-liiga defenseman Markus Nordlund.

Starting off with the Junior pick. Brendan is 5ft. 10in, 177lbs, and is from North Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 0 goals in 53 games played, 14 assists, a +/- of 9, 33 PIM, 4 power play assist, 1 short handed assist, and 62 shots on goal. He is signed with the Wild again for the 2012-2013 season. Brendan has great hands, puck control, and lightning fast skates. Good luck Brendan with the Wild and in your future hockey career!

Next, we have the NHL player. Scott is 6ft. 2in, 210lbs, and is from Regina, Saskatchewan. He was drafted 1st round 6th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. Scott had 37 goals in 82 games played, 30 assists, 67 TPs, a +/- of 19, 136 PIMs, 232 shots on goal, a 15.9% shot average, 16 power play goals, 7 power play assists, 0 short handed goals, 0 short handed assists, and 6 game winning goals. Hartnell is a player who takes his agression out on the ice and on his opponents. In a good way most times, but sometimes you just have to "Hartnell Down" once in awhile if you know what I mean! Good luck Scott with the Flyers and in your future NHL career!

Last but not least we have the European pick. Markus is 6ft. 5in, 209 lbs, and is from Eurajoki, Finland. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 5 goals in 57 games played, 16 assists, 21 TPs, 20 PIMs, and a +/- of 4. Markus is signed with the Jokerit for the 2012-2013 season. He has a huge heavy shot, great dekeing ability, and has a huge presence on the ice not just because of his size, but because of his skill and aggression. Good Luck Markus with the Jokerit and your future hockey career!

Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
