Biscuits and Breezers
Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be talking about Sean Monahan out with a hairline fracture, Tomas Vokoun's recovery, and Varlamov is in the process of receiving final charges for the assault case against Evgeniya Vavrinyuk. Starting off with Varlamov. As we all should know already, Semyon Varlamov was arrested, spent a night in jail, and was released on a $5,000 bond for suspicion of domestic assault. Well his initial court date on October 31st allowed him to travel with the team and to be able to be released on bond. Now, he has been charged with a misdemeanor of one count of third degree assault. This charge was announced on the 22nd by Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey. Varlamov is expected to be seen in court on December 2nd for a final hearing. He can still no longer have contact or visit Ms. Vavrinyuk. We will just have to wait and see what Monday brings us as well as the league.
Sean Monahan is THE star rookie in Clagary at moment and is shining very brightly. Due to a fracture, his light will have to be dimmed for at least the next two games. His injury status is week to week according to the Flames organization. Monahan is currently ranked 2nd in scoring as a rookie in the league behind San Jose's Tomas Hertl and is second in points on the Flames' roster with a total of 15 points so far. It was reported that on November 21st, he took a shot to the foot in practice but still continued to play 2 following games. He scored his 9th goal against the Blackhawks but his foot still proved to be very painful. Monahan had an x-ray done on Thursday that confirmed this hairline fracture. Apparently, he will be re-evaluated at the beginning of this week to get a better status on his injury and how long he will have to be out. Hopefully Sean will get better soon and will be laced up before we know it. Get well soon!
Lastly, we have Penguins goalie Tomas Vokoun. Thankfully he is recovering quickly and comfortably after discovering a blood clot in his pelvis in early September. He is expecting to be out 3-6 months, put forth in October, and is thinking of an early return although it is too soon to tell. He is still taking the prescribed medication and is looking at a hopeful future. Tomas, who lives in Parkland Florida, attended the Penguins vs. Panthers game on November 30th. This has been his second blood clot incident in a seven year time frame. His blood is checked every 2 weeks and is scheduled to meet with the hematologist next month. While he is sidelined, Tomas is enjoying the time he has to spend with his two daughters Adelle and Natalie as well as his wife Dagmar. If he doesn't decided to return to Pittsburgh's line up, it appears that Vokoun might consider a retirement from the NHL. Get well soon and keep resting up!
Now we have come to the "Players of Today" segment! For the junior pick we have Ogden Mustangs goaltender Tyler Fallica. For the NHL pick we have Ottawa Senators forward Bobby Ryan. For the European pick we have KalPa Liiga forward and 2014 NHL draft prospect Kasperi Kapanen.
Tyler is 5 ft 9 in, 181 lbs, and is from Coram, New York, USA. In the 2012-2013 he played for the Ogden Mustangs as well. Last season, he had 3.90 goals against average in 31 games played and .894 save percentage. Tyler is a very well rounded goalie and is very experienced in the cage. I was watching him play throughout the Maulers vs. Mustangs series and, in my opinion, was one of their better goaltenders. Being the veteran with two rookies of his own, Fallica is very influential on both of them. He has great glove catches and butterflies. Tyler has a quick response time between the pipes and is very attentive to everything going on outside the crease. Unfortunately, he ages out this year but hopefully he will be a great addition to any college team. It will be interesting to see if he goes on with a college career and how he does with life outside of juniors. Good luck Tyler with the rest of your season in Ogden and your future hockey career!
Kasperi is 5 ft 11 in, 165 lbs, and is from Kuopio, Finland. Last season, he played with the KalPa U20 and had 14 goals in 36 games played, 15 assists, 29 total points, 16 PIMs, and a +/- of -3. His grandfather was Hannu Kapanen who was a veteran forward for Jokerit and HIFK for 5 seasons and he played for Finland in the 1976 Canada Cup as well as the 1976 Olympics. His father, Sami Kapanen, was drafted 87th overall in the 4th round to the Hartford Whalers in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He has 458 total points at the end of his career as well as 831 games in 12 seasons which concluded with the Hurricanes and Flyers under his belt. He retired in the '07-'08 season and owns the majority of his son's team KalPa which he has played on for the past 5 out of 6 seasons. Kasperi is expected to be picked 15th overall in the first round by the Washington Capitals. He is a quick scorer that slips through lines easily and can snipe a goal past a goaltender with ease. Kasperi has quick skates and is very agile out on the ice. He isn't that physical but hopefully that skill will develop more and more as he furthers himself in hockey. Also he needs add a bit more weight to back up his shots on goal. But all in all he is a great player with filthy mitts that will go for in the show if he is picked up by a team. Good luck Kasperi with KalPa and your hopeful draft selection!
Bobby is 6 ft 2 in, 207 lbs, and is from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA. He was drafted 2nd overall in the 1st round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft to the Anaheim Ducks. He was traded to Ottawa in the 2012-2013 off season from Anaheim in exchange for Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen, and a first round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. So far in the 2013-2014 season, Ryan has 13 goals in 26 games played, 13 assists, 25 TPs, a +/- of 8, 12 PIMs, 5 power play goals, 1 game winning goal, 71 shots on goal, and an S% of 18.3. He is very sharp with the puck as well as very aggressive at any point in the game that he can be. Bobby has a very keen hockey sense that allows him to make or change plays very quickly. He is a great play maker for the Senators and keeps things moving at a rapid pace most of the time. I would not necessarily describe him as an attacker but he definitely does try to move the puck as much as can and get it to where it needs to go. Good luck Bobby with the Senators and your future NHL career!
