Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! I know this is the 75th regular blog but this is the 100th article ever published! In this blog we will be talking about the start of the 2013-2014 NHL regular season, Tomas Hertl's amazing 4 goal game and trick shot, and the illegal head hit on Rangers right winger Rick Nash. Starting off with with the NHL! See I told you that the next regular blog would be over the start of the 2013-2014 season! Currently here are the standings in the leagues! 1. San Jose 8 pts 2. Colorado 8 pts 3. Toronto 8 pts 4. St. Louis 6 points 5. Pittsburgh 6 pts 6. Anaheim 6 pts 7. Tampa Bay 6 pts 8. Calgary 6 pts 9. Vancouver 6 pts 10. NY Islanders 5 pts 11. Carolina 5 pts. Teams with 4 points total are: Boston, Columbus, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Detroit, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Minnesota. Teams with 3 points total are: Chicago and New Jersey. Teams with 2 points total are: Dallas, Philadelphia, Nashville, Florida, NY Rangers, Washington, and Edmonton. The 1 and only team with 1 point total would be Buffalo. I am very thrilled about this season because a lot of my favored (and favorite) draft picks from the 2012 draft are finally playing in the show and it is awesome to get to see them out on the ice with some of my favorite players, and only if it was in the preseason as well. The rookies I am personally watching this year would be Olli Maatta and Derrick Poulliot in Pittsburgh, Elias Lindholm and Austin Lotz in Carolina, Ryan Murray, Oscar Dansk and Alexander Wennberg in Columbus, "rookie" Eddie Lack in Vancouver, Tomas Hertl in San Jose, Teuvo Teravainen in Chicago, and Filip Forsberg and Pontus Aberg in Nashville. I know it is an unusually long list but hey what can I say? A lot of potential is skating around out there! There are currently a lot of winning streaks going to say the least. Some of the teams have a streak of 3-4 games already. In my opinion I think the 2013-2014 season will be a thriller and action packed because you already have the best players racking up points and now along with that add some of the highest ranking prospects in 5 years! I think I will leave you all with that and we can continue on with our blog and get back to the rest of the NHL season!

If you have been on any hockey related page or site in the past 3 days you might have seen an incredible game played by none other than Czech rookie Tomas Hertl. He helped the Sharks rout the Rangers with 4 goals to his name. He became the youngest NHL player to score 4 goals in a game since Jimmy Carson did it on March 20th, 1988. Hertl also became the first player in the Sharks' history to score at least 6 goals in his first 3 games played. One of the best goals was when he skated up to Martin Biron, pushed the puck between his legs, and scored over Biron's right shoulder. It was incredible! I mean look at this guy!

A person could not put on a straight face and say that this kid isn't going places because we all know, hockey fan or not, this is impressive! These skills are not seen in the NHL very often but this is how it should be! There is so much passion in his game and that could definitely be the key to his recent success. It has been noticed in the past that sometimes players that have been in the league for a long period of time start to loose that passion unfortunately. It is understandable but sad still. Good luck Tomas with the NHL and never let your passion die out! You have incredible skills that are going to produce some amazing plays!

On a more important note, Rick Nash has been sent back to New York after a devastating illegal check to the head that left him with terrible head pains that eventually worsened. Nash has a history of concussions and this caused him to miss the Rangers' next two games as well as leave the game on Tuesday. Rick said after, "It just didn't feel right, any time you get a head shot you're concerned. It's just not a good feeling." The illegal check was produced by Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart. It was first thought to be an elbowing penalty but in all reality it was a shoulder-head check. According to the Shanahan the hit was fine until Stuart, "unnecessarily extended the left side of his body upward, specifically his left shoulder in a way that makes Nash's head the main point of contact, causing an injury." Upon further review, Stuart will be suspended 3 games and will forfeit $55,384.62 in pay. It is always distressing to hear hits like this because not are they morally wrong but they also effect players the rest of their lives. I hope that players will check legally more in the future so that it won't backlash on the future players.

Now for the "Players of Today" segment! For the NHL pick we have Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price. For the goalie pick we have Rochester Americans tendy Andrei Makarov. For the European pick we have Billings Bulls defenseman Adam Wikingsson.

Carey is 6 ft 3 in, 212 lbs, and is from Anahim Lake, British Columbia, Canada. He was drafted 5th overall in the 1st round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft to the Montreal Canadiens. In the 2012-2013 season, he had 21 wins in 39 games played, 13 losses, 4 overtime losses, 3 shut outs, 97 goals against, 1,018 saves against, .905 save percentage, 2.59 goals against average, and 2,249 total minutes played. I really like the way Carey plays because he has his serious sides as well as his foolish sides. It can be seen together as well as separate when he is between the pipes. He has great butterflies and is great with the blocker. I like to watch him play because he is very attentive to the his team mates and their well being. He is very good at predicting game plans and acting strong under stress. Good luck Carey with the Canadiens and your future NHL career!

Andrei is 6 ft 0 in, 165 lbs, and is from Kazan, Russia. In the 2012-2013 season, Makarov had 2.62 goals against average in 61 games played and a save percentage of .919. He previously played for the Saskatoon Blades in the WHL but was sent up to the AHL to play for the Americans. He is a very talented goalie and has a lot of potential for his future career in ice hockey. Andrei trusts his pipes and uses them quite frequently to save pucks instead on solely relying on his pads or stick. He is also plays a very clean game. Now I know that might be weird to say for a goaltender but it's true! I am looking forward to seeing him play this season and more in the future! Good luck Andrei with the Americans and your future hockey career!

Adam is 5 ft 11 in, 181 lbs, and is from Tingsryd, Sweden. In the 2012-2013 season, he had 7 goals in 43 games played, 19 assists, 26 TPs, 120 PIMs, and a +/- of 3. Watching the AWHL last season, Wikingsson was one of my favorite blue liners to watch. He was incredibly good with the puck, got along with his team mates very well, and had a very physical game play. Adam definitely doesn't shy away from banging bodies or defending fellow players. He has very good stick handling skills and can chuck some sick sauce. He skates very well and has great on ice vision. I know that where ever he plays they will benefit from his high hockey IQ and sense. Good luck Adam with your future hockey career!

Spotlight Player Emil Travergard       Biscuits and Breezers         Welcome back to another blog for Biscuits and Breezers! This is another post for the Spotlight Player series, and the player featured today, is a prime example of the defensive qualities that are capable in blue liners. Trending on an upward slope, this particular player brings fire to the ice as well as quite the chill. He may be an independent skater, but he is almost always his team's biggest supporter in the long run. The next Spotlight Player is Haninge Anchors defenseman Emil Travergard!     Emil Travergard - Haninge Anchors (D)   Height: 6 ft 2 in  Weight:  215 lbs Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden 2013-2014 Stats: 1 goal in 23 games played, 3 assists, 4 TPs, and 14 PIMs with Hammarby J20         While watching Travergard on the ice during his stay in the WSHL, he certainly brought a spar...
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost alway...
#32   Biscuits and Breezers          Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will talk about the Oilers' team regrowth and Wild prospect Mario Lucia breaking his leg. Starting off with the Edmonton Oilers. I have recently talked about Taylor Hall's signing and now we have another. This time it's Jordan Eberle's turn. He was just inked to a 6 year $36 million contract extension on Tuesday. With one year left on his entry level contract, this extension will keep him as the new youthful generation of players until the 2018-2019 season. Hopefully with Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, they can produce a team almost as good as in the Gretzky era. Just give them a few years and maybe they will rise up and become a main threat again. We will see! Good luck Jordan with the new contract! I am quite excited to see the upcoming team.     Next thing we will talk about is Ma...
