Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Well, we are about 4-7 games into the 2014-2015 NHL season, and already, things are starting to heat up. Teams are looking very strong coming out of a very competitive off season and players are finding their places throughout the rosters as well as on the ice. The new coaches are settling well into their new positions such as in Pittsburgh, Vancouver, and Carolina. There have been quite a few news headlines for the show this week and here they are! (Many to catch up on so this section will be quite long)

There has been quite an influx of injuries to start off a season and to name some: Valeri Nichushkin of the Dallas Stars has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury, Joffrey Lupul of the Toronto Maple Leafs missed last Thursday's practice with a lower body injury that has yet to be disclosed, Anaheim Ducks forward Patrick Maroon will be out for four weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL), and Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman sustained an upper body injury during the second period of Saturday's game against the Vancouver Canucks and will be out for 4-6 weeks with a fractured finger. Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov has been placed on injured reserve after sustaining a particularly serious groin injury, Paul Stastny of the St. Louis Blues has been declared day to day as a result of an upper body injury (left arm) sustained in the game against the Arizona Coyotes, and Mikhail Grabovski of the New York Islanders will be out indefinitely due to an injury he sustained in the first period of last Thursday's game against the San Jose Sharks when he was hit and plowed to the ice by John Scott, who I might add, is 6 ft 8 in and 260 lbs. Grabovski is said to have woken up with concussion like symptoms after the morning after being tested for a concussion but he is still stated to have avoided a concussion. He will be tested again later this week.

To continue on with the NHL news, many of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft top round draft picks have donned NHL jerseys, but mostly for conditioning, have been reassigned to AHL teams. 2013 3rd pick overall Jonathan Drouin has been recalled by the Lightning after playing 2 games for conditioning with the Syracuse Crunch, Vancouver Canucks 2013 9th overall draft pick Bo Horvat has been reassigned to the Utica Comets for conditioning, and 2012 4th overall draft pick New York Islanders defenseman Griffin Reinhart has been reassigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

There are a few headlines left for the NHL so I will just list them out:
* Predicted 2015 NHL Entry Draft 1st overall pick Connor McDavid is having a record setting season with currently 25 points in only 9 games played
* Last year's draft brought in many talented skaters but one triumphs over them all. After showing immense determination and passion for the game, Mackenze Stewart was drafted 186th overall to the Vancouver Canucks. Overcoming childhood deafness, Stewart has become one of the first hearing-impaired players to reach the NHL level. I just want to take a minute and wish him the best of luck in the show because he shows that when you put determination, strength, and passion into your dreams anything is possible
*It was announced that Nashville will host the NHL All-Star weekend January 30-31 in 2016
*Detroit Red Wings have signed 2013 NHL draft pick Tyler Bertuzzi to a 3 year contract
*Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins has been fined $5,000 dollars and made a public apology following obscene gestures directed towards Montreal Canadiens fans after being put in the penalty box Thursday night in Montreal's home opener. The blood continues to boil between Lucic and the Canadiens.

Now for some EIHL news! Matthew Myers of the Cardiff Devils has been banned for two games after a hit that was determined as a check from behind. The Dundee Stars have signed defenseman Ryan Grimshaw, Fife Flyers' Danny Stewart has played in his 500th game, the Sheffield Steelers have signed Ben O'Connor, and the Coventry Blaze have signed Swedish forward Niklas Ottosson.
Since there wasn't much news for the EIHL, the current standings for the league are:

1. Braehead Clan - 15 points
2. Belfast Giants - 14 points
3. Coventry Blaze - 14 points
4. Sheffield Steelers - 10 points
5. Cardiff Devils - 9 points
6. Nottingham Panthers - 8 points
7. Fife Flyers - 8 points
8. Hull Stingrays - 7 points
9. Edinburgh Capitals - 5 points
10. Dundee Stars - 3 points

We have come to the part of this blog where can discuss some junior news! First things first, after receiving a press release today, the Helena Bighorns have traded Justin Provencher to the Point Mallard Ducks in return for Finnish defenseman Jiri Ryyppo and their 2nd and 7th round picks in next year's NA3HL Draft. Jiri will be Helena's first import player of the season. The Ogden Mustangs have named their captains for the 2014-2015 season with Schuyler Seyfert and David Clements wearing the C while Craig Moore, Charlie Reed, and Jon Mencer will represent the team as assistant captains. Finally, we have some league standings. In the WSHL, the Southern Oregon Spartans are sitting comfortably at the top of the league with 23 points so far followed closely behind by the Casper Coyotes with 22 points. The Idaho Jr. Steelheads (who have 19 points at the moment) have the best win percentage in the league at .950 and the Fresno Monsters have the most goals clocking in with 78. Over in the NA3, 5 teams are tied for first place with 18 points but it's the Helena Bighorns and the Great Falls Americans who lead the league in win percentage; each with a 1.000%. The Metro Jets have the highest goals for at 56 and the Sugar Land Imperials lead in penalty minutes with an outstanding 387 PIMs throughout only 11 games.

Now for the "Players of Today" segment of this post! For the NHL pick we have Minnesota Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper. For the Goalie pick we have Bodens HF goaltender Jeseper Sannerborg. For the European pick we have Frolunda forward Anton Blidh.

Darcy is 6 ft 5 in, 205 lbs, and is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was drafted 161st overall to the Minnesota Wild in the 6th round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In the 2013-2014 season, he had 12 wins in 26 games played, 8 losses, 4 OT losses, 2 shut outs, 60 goals against, 702 shots against, a .915 save percentage, 2.43 goals against average, and 1,480 minutes played. Darcy is doing absolutely phenomenal in is his 3rd year with Minnesota and has quickly risen to certainly become one of the league's most elite net minders. He is incredibly smart between the pipes and has gotten significantly stronger than when he was on the ice since last season. Darcy is very observant when he is in the cage and never backs down from the highest level of play possible. He is constantly changing his game to match the game of his individual opponents and is on constant high alert. He carries the Wild logo as proudly as he can. Kuemper will do what ever it takes for his team to succeed. Darcy will definitely be one of the goaltenders that is a name long remembered by fans for years to come. Good luck Darcy with the Wild and your future NHL career!

Jesper is 6 ft 1 in, 183 lbs, and is from Lulea, Sweden. In the 2012-2013 season, he had 3.13 goals against average in 16 games played and a .895 save percentage. In the '12-'13 season, Sannerborg was playing with the Valencia Flyers of the WSHL and now he is playing with Bodens HF. Sannerborg has many great components to his game but one of them would definitely have to be his drive to win and his determination to rise to the top of the pack. You can always tell that he is out there trying his absolute best and trying to accomplish as much success as possible for the pure love of the game. Any time he is out on the ice, he is a player to watch because he isn't there playing for the name on the back, he is there playing for the logo on the front and he is there to see his team succeed. He has great technical skills in the cage such as a fantastic glove and great butterflies. Like many other goaltenders, he trusts the pipes, but unlike most, he knows every inch of the net. Jesper is great at covering every pocket. He stands his ground no matter the situation outside of the net is and is always ready for any outcome thrown at him. Jesper's hockey IQ is through the roof and is always giving 110%. It will be very interesting to see where his future career takes him because he has amazing skills and has great potential to become an elite goalie. Good luck Jesper with Bodens HF and your future hockey career!

Anton is 6 ft 0 in, 187 lbs, and is from Molnlycke, Sweden. In the 2013-2014 season, he had 11 goals in 27 games played, 14 assists, 25 TPs, 20 PIMs, and a +/- of 15. Anton was drafted 180th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 6th round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. When you think of the type of player every team wants to have, that is exactly the type of player Anton Blidh is. He plays a huge game, he is an incredibly strong player, he is reliable in any situation, and he isn't intimidated by any skater. He gives everything he has to his team and never misses an opportunity to rise them higher. Anton can absolutely rocket around the ice and always knows what needs to get done to bring home the wins every night. He is an incredibly hard worker and has an outstanding work ethic. Blidh is the essential professional hockey player because he is as tough as nails and nothing phases him. He is a very solid skater and is always there when his team needs him, no matter the problem. Anton is an absolute brick wall of a player and has such a bright future in the sport. He is definitely a name you will want to watch because he is going to be taking the game by storm. He is an absolutely wicked player and one of the best you will see go through the game. Good luck Anton with Frolunda and your future hockey career!

Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
