                                                             Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be talking about MacKinnon's contract with Colorado, NHL Draftee for the Winnipeg Jets and goaltender Eric Comrie, and the huge Dallas/Boston trade. Starting off with Eric Comrie. In the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Comrie was selected 59th overall in the 2nd round by Winnipeg coming from the Tri-City Americans roster in the WHL. Why am I telling you all this? This is because recently I had the great pleasure of interviewing him! In the 2012- 2013 season, he had 3 assists in 37 games played, 2 PIMs, 2178 minutes played, 95 goals against, 2 shut outs, 2.62 goals against average, 20 wins, 14 losses, 3 ties, 1023 saves, and 0.915 save percentage. He is the younger half-brother of former NHLer Mike Comrie. Now unfortunately his season was cut short due to a severe hip injury. Even though this did happen, Eric showed what a fantastic net minder he is. He knows his strengths, his weaknesses, and what path he needs to take to make it into the show. When you watch him play you can most definitely tell that he knows his corners. Eric is very very smart in the cage and is constantly watching everyone out on shifts at all times. I was very lucky to land this interview and I would just like to say thank you! Here it is! The first question I asked Eric was, "Were you happy to be chosen by Winnipeg? Is it what you expected?" Eric responded, "I was thrilled to be chosen to such a great team with some really good prospects they have one of the most loyal fan bases it's super exciting. I was not expecting Winnipeg but I was so thrilled that I was picked by them." I then asked, "How did it feel to attend the draft?" "It was super cool and ever better I had the chance to spend it with the most important people in my life my family!" I said, "How did it feel to be chosen in the 2nd round including some of the top rated prospects?" He answered, "It was an amazing experience every part of it was just so much fun." "Where do you see yourself in 10 years with your hockey career? Do you think you will be on Winnipeg's roster anytime soon?" He responded, "I am not sure to be honest I am just going to focus on the moment and get better every time I step on the ice or get in the weight room!" I proceeded to ask, "How do you think your 'trials' went in Toronto at the combine?" Eric said to me, "I was not able to do the testing due to my injury but the interviews went amazing and had lots of fun." "How do you think your season with the Americans last year?" Comrie replied, "It was an awesome year had lots of fun with the team really was unfortunate to have gotten injured." One of my last questions was, "If you could have had any team pick you who would you want and why?" He responded, "I would say Winnipeg because they were the team that showed that they trust me!" The second to last question was, "How do you plan to improve your game for more seasons to come?" He said, "I just plan on improving all the little things in my game and become a more sound goalie." The last question was, "At the draft did you get to meet any prospects or team consultants that you were excited about? How did it feel to see Gary Bettman there?" His last response was, "I met a lot of amazing people it was just such an amazing experience!!" As you can see Eric was very enthused with his draft experience and intends to take this dream all the way. I know that I personally am going to keep tabs on him and I hope you all do too. He definitely has the guts for the show. Will we see his name next to Ondrej Pavelec? We will just have to wait and find out.

As we all know many players have been on the trade block during this year's free agency, some taken off and some still remain, but one of the biggest signings was Boston and Dallas' 7 player trade. After a dysfunctional Stanley Cup final Boston decided to lighten their load and bring in some fresh talent. On the other hand Dallas who hasn't been in the playoffs for quite some time wanted some players that could raise their hopes as well as their ranking. Tyler Seguin, a young hot shot in Beantown, was one of the main players that the Bruins relied on to make a repeat cup run. Well unfortunately he did not produce near enough points and quite frankly hasn't been ever since 2011. Seguin was definitely half of the epicenter of this trade. He has the offensive skill and drive that would lift Dallas a few spots and if they can mold him into a more mature player, Tyler will be perfect in the Lone Star state. For the past couple of seasons, Swedish forward Loui Eriksson has stolen the show for the Stars. Quick skates, wicked shot, and works the boards once in a while. Loui has been a diamond in the rough and now finally has the time to shine. With the big names in Boston such as Chara, Beregeron, Lucic, Krejci, Rask, and many others Eriksson will have room to expand on his game and feed off of the others. In the entire trade, Boston sent Seguin, Rich Peverly, and Ryan Button down to Dallas in exchange for Eriksson, Joe Morrow, Matt Fraser, and Reilly Smith. This is a great trade for both teams but Dallas is going to have problems to fix first with their new 'Star'. Known back in Boston as a notorious partier, drinker, Twitter fanatic, and ladies man, Seguin is going to have to clean up his game as well as his personal life before the Texas organization will approve of him playing. He has agreed to this and is looking at things in terms of a fresh start. Tyler shut his Twitter account down after multiple "hacking" incidents and made the commitment to grow up. I like that he has the "there is no I in team" mentality. Maybe he will start gaining fans back and credibility as well. Can we see a more professional player on and off the ice in time for next season? Generally speaking, good luck Tyler you have a long road ahead.

Being the first overall draft pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and the Memorial Cup MVP, Nathan MacKinnon is a NHL team's dream. To go along with all of these great accomplishments he now can boast a 3 year entry level contract with the Colorado Avalanche. With this contract, many are speculating him to be the next Crosby. This definitely could all well be but he has a long way to get to that point. To put a new draftee in this position adds tremendous amounts of pressure to an already stressful situation. Both hail from Nova Scotia and can rack up points as easy as putting cookies in a cookie jar, but in all reality these are all the similarities they have to each other on the ice. MacKinnon is 1 inch taller, Crosby is 18 lbs heavier, Crosby shoots left, Nathan shoots right, in both of their draft years Crosby had 168 total points in Rimouski and Nathan had only 75 with Halifax. Sidney is a player who relies on his talent and knowledge of the game to score points and on the other hand Nathan is a grittier player who works incredibly hard to score his. I would like to see MacKinnon become successful but he has quite a long way to go to become "The Second Crosby". I am sorry but in my opinion I can't see why the public is exaggerating this as much as they are. I can see them comparing him to Toews or Giroux but definitely not in this world Sidney Crosby.

Now we have come to the "Players of Today"! For the Junior pick we have Shattuck St. Mary's Center Nathan Noel. For the Goalie pick we have Nashville Predators goaltender Chris Mason. For the European pick we Assat SM-liiga right wing Joel Armia.

Nathan is 5 ft 11 in, 170 lbs, and is from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 45 goals in 56 games played, 59 assists, 104 TPs, and 44 PIMs. Attending Shattuck St. Mary's, the same school that Jonathan Toews and Sidney Crosby attended, Nathan is a blossoming player getting ready to bloom. He has great hands and is always putting the puck where it needs to go. Picks a corner and puts it top shelf where mama hides the cookies. Noel has great on ice vision and great skates. I am telling you this kid is a definite 1st round pick in his draft year. What the most exciting part of his hockey career is that he has the guts and mentality to become an NHL captain. He seriously could be the next leader in a long line. I hope he finds the courage to continue on because if he doesn't that would be so much talent wasted. He was drafted 3rd overall to the Saint John's Sea Dogs in the 2013 QMJHL draft. Most of the time you expect players at a young age get drafted for their speed or for their physical but this not in Noel's case. He has a bright future ahead of him and it will only get brighter. Good luck Nathan with Shattuck and your future hockey career!

Chris is 6 ft 0 in, 198 lbs, and is from Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He was drafted in the 5th round 122nd overall to the New Jersey Devils In the 2012-2013 season, he had 1 win in 11 games played, 7 losses, 1 overtime loss, 0 shut outs, 29 goals against, 229 shots against, a .873 save percentage, 3.73 goals against average, and 467 minutes played. I think that he plays very well and tries to show it every time he gets ice time. Even though he has bounced around with teams a couple of times, he still is as bright as always. He has a huge shadow to play in and that is star goaltender Pekka Rinne. I believe that if practices more and shows his next team that he is ready, maybe he can move up to the line up and have some one else be his back up! Show some back up tendy appreciation! I hope to see him in the starting line up sometime soon. Good luck Chris with the Predators and your future NHL career!

Joel is 6 ft 3 in, 203 lbs, and is from Pori, Finland. He was drafted 16th overall in the 1st round to the Buffalo Sabres in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In the 2012-2013 season, he had 19 goals in 47 games played, 14 assists, 33 TPs, 32 PIMs, and a +/- 12. I really like the way this guy plays his games because it is clean cut, simple, and to the point. He plays large and very strong, likes to dangle out other players, and goes straight to the opponent's net. He has very accurate shots and very strong on ice skills. I think that when he gets up into the show that he will be a very main component in a successful season. Joel is one of those players that takes charge of the game and makes things happen. He is a successful play maker and a leader. He uses his size to his advantage and frankly that's what gets his points on the board. When he does in fact play with Buffalo I think that he will increase their offensive game severely. If I was coaching a team, I would definitely place him on my roster before anyone else could. He has game and he is going to use it as long as it lasts. Good luck Joel with your new signing with the Rochester Americans in the AHL and your future hockey career!

Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
