Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will have an interview with former Yellowstone Quake now Helena Bighorn Chris Andre, two NHL game reviews chosen by you, and John Erskine suspended 3 games for elbowing. First off we will get to Chris Andre's interview. Now I interviewed him after the 1/25/13 Missoula Maulers game when he was ejected for fighting with Brett Mathews. He was then transferred to the Helena Bighorns when Kevin Choi was sent to the New Mexico Renegades. Andre then played in Missoula less than a week later, and got ejected again after getting into a scuffle with Matt Chamberlain. Chamberlain was ejected also. Personally I think that Chris is a beast player and will go very far in hockey. Possibly even to the point where he gets drafted. You never know what will happen in life. In my personal opinion and not to offend any one in the Maulers organization, he is a huge threat for them. He is a big player who isn't afraid to throw a punch or two which is really good to see in juniors. I apologize I am getting this out later than I had hoped but here it is! The first question I asked Chris was, "What happened in your point of view?" He responded, "Well it started when number 7 [Zach Paisley] on their team slashing our goalie then, we went after him. He ended up going after another kid on our team, then Mathews grabbed me, the refs separated us then he came after me again so I had to drop 'em at that point." The question after that was, "Do you think that it was a right call to throw him out of the game or do you think he should have gotten a longer suspension?" Andre replied, "I don't know, as I got thrown out too and we are both suspended for tomorrow. Throwing out I guess I'm fine with but the extra game I don't agree with." I then asked, "If you were a captain in his position would you have instigated a fight like that?" He answered, "From their point of view probably not because they had the lead, but in my case I think it helped fire up the team." The last question I asked Chris was, "Do you think this win will result in a win tomorrow too? Do you think you could have made him look a lot worse? Do more damage?" His final answer was, "I think the overtime win will definitely carry some momentum into tomorrow's game but they will come out flying tomorrow. And yes I do because I had him in a vulnerable position but didn't land as many solid ones as I would have liked to." The Quake won 6-3 the next day and Chris won with the Bighorns on 2/2/13 5-0 with goaltender Jett Salinas getting a very desired shutout in "Zootown". The Maulers put up quite a fight all three games but unfortunately, in my opinion, haven't used their full potential yet. Thanks Chris so much for the interview and good luck with Helena and capturing the Regular Season Championship title and hopefully going to Nationals!

Next we have the NHL game reviews! I went onto Facebook and asked you all what games you would like to see reviewed on here and you answered. You in fact answered with the Pittsburgh vs. Washington game and the New York Islanders vs. New Jersey game. Thank you everyone! I will try to incorporate you all more and more as we progress in blog and view numbers! So, without further a do, let's get started! Chris Kunitz's hat trick against the Capitals really gained much needed momentum for the Pens. The final score of the game was 6-3. The first goal of the game came at 3:37 for the Pens from Paul Martin and an assist from Sidney Crosby. Hot on their trail, the Capitals had Mike Green score at 5:05 in to the first period. He had assists from Wojtek Wolski and Mike Ribeiro. Matt Cooke then scored the last goal in the first period for Pittsburgh at 8:20. Matt had assists from Deryk Engelland and Robert Bortuzzo. To kick off the second period John Carlson scored for the Capitals at 4:03 in. He had an assist from one of my personal favorite players Nicklas Backstrom. The next goal was scored at 6:56 by another one of my favorite players, intense d-man Kris Letang. He was assisted by Brandon Sutter and Matt Cooke in this goal for the Pens. To carry on the momentum for Pittsburgh, Chris Kunitz scored a hat trick. The first goal of his came out at 7:53 in the second with assists from the double headed monster Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The next goal from Kunitz came at 13:59 in the second and was the last goal of the second period. Chris had some help from Evgeni Malkin and James 'The Real Deal' Neal. This was a power play goal. To start off the third period, Mike Ribeiro kicked things off to score 3:33 minutes in on a power play, the last goal for the Caps. He had a little assistance from Troy Brouwer and Alexander Ovechkin. The last game was scored by Chris Kunitz to cap off his hat trick at 19:52 minutes into the third. Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang were given the assists. It came out later today that the first goal in the game scored by Paul Martin was actually scored by Chris Kunitz. Kunitz had redirected Martin's shot. Paul did say that he did have his stick on the puck though. Officials originally gave Kunitz the goal but later changed it to Martin. This will be Chris's sixth goal of the season now. I am not sure if they will change the victory in Chris Kunitz's favor or the NHL will keep it the same, but either way congratulations Pittsburgh on the victory and the Capitals put up a good fight! Keep on trucking boys!

Now we have the New York Islanders vs. New Jersey Devils game! This was a very slow moving game I thought. There were no goals until the third period in which they came fast and furious. To get the Devils on the board, Steve Bernier shot one past Nabokov with some help on a power play from Ilya Kovalchuk and Andy Greene. This until late in the third at 16:06. The next goal was scored one minute and ten seconds later at 17:16 again from Steve Bernier. Ryan Carter and Steven Gionta were given the assists. The last goal against Nabokov was from David Clarkson. Andy Greene was given his second assist of the game. 19:38 was the time of the goal. Congratulations New Jersey and keep working hard Islanders!

Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine has been suspended 3 games for elbowing Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds in the head. He sent Simmonds to the ice with a bloody nose after a brutal hit near the face area. Now Wayne is out with a head injury, probably a concussion. The hit occurred late in the first period. Erskine will forfeit $24,324.33 of his average salary to the Players' Emergency Assistant Fund. Wayne seemed ok after the game but was suffering some whiplash from the hit. John was not penalized though which is a bit odd in my opinion because the league is taking a heavier precaution on head hits like this. Erskine will be able to play again on February 9th against Florida. Right after the hit, Zac Rinaldo and Matt Hendricks fought it out before the faceoff and both were served with 5 minute fighting major penalties and a game misconduct. Interesting situation considering the officials are supposed to be taking extra precautions on head injuries to prevent them from happening more in the future. Some food for thought I guess.

Now we have the "Players of Today" segment! For the Junior pick we have Rochester Ice Hawk forward Jarrett Pfeiffer. For the NHL player we have Philadelphia Flyers center Brayden Schenn. For the European pick we have Vaxjo J20 SuperElit goaltender Andreas Horberg.

First we have the junior pick. Jarrett is 5 ft 11 in, 165 lbs, and is from Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA. In the 2012-2013 season, he has 27 goals in 41 games played, 39 assists, 66 TPs, 7 power play goals, and 36 PIMs. Jarrett is a very good and powerful player out on the ice. He has good on-ice vision, quick skates, soft hands, and great communication with his team. I really like how he plays because he basically uses everything he has built up in his muscles and just expands it out into his shift. He seems to work very hard all the time and it definitely shows not only on the stats, but also on his plays. I don't know if he will stay in Rochester with the Ice Hawks or if hopefully he will move up in the 2013-2014 season. If he has a "saving grace" ever it would be his puck control. In my opinion it is absolutely incredible. Each pass flows gracefully and smoothly. No matter if it's a saucer, sending the biscuit around the boards, or cherry picking, Jarrett has it on lock. Good luck Jarrett in Rochester and in your future hockey career!

Next, we have the NHL player! Brayden is 6 ft 1 in, 190 lbs, and is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was drafted 1st round 5th overall by the LA Kings in 2009. Brayden's brother is Luke Schenn who also holds a spot on the Flyers' roster. They have finally got them together permanently. In the 2011-2012 NHL season, he had 12 goals in 54 games played, 6 assists, 18 TPs, a +/- of -7, 34 PIMs, 4 power play goals, 0 short handed goals, 3 game winning goals, 97 shots on goal, and a S% of 12.4. When playing with the Saskatoon Blades and Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL and the Manchester Monarchs and Adirondack Phantoms in the AHL, Brayden definitely built up his skill and momentum before actually getting a fairly good season on the record books in the NHL. I think it is especially good that he is playing with his brother now because of the communication between them. If the Flyers were going to have a run at the Cup, this would be one of the main reasons why. Even though he is younger than Luke, they make things work. I absolutely love brothers who play together in the NHL for the reason that there is always a rivalry on and off the ice. Brayden is a very good shooter who loves to work the boards and bang bodies. He has a wicked clapper that would just love to eat through skates any time they wanted to. Keep it up! Good luck Brayden with the Flyers and your future NHL career!

Last but certainly not least, we have the goalie pick. Andreas is 6 ft 2 in, 190 lbs, and is from Varnamo, Sweden. In the 2011-2012 season with the Vaxjo J18 team, he had 19 games played, 3.75 goals against average, and a save percentage of .877. Andreas is a very big goalie who fills up the net completely. He definitely uses his height to his advantage and also he uses his glove a lot more than goalies normally would. His butterflies, in my opinion are very good and well rounded. Sometimes goal tenders will go on their knees more than they should and that can cause all sorts of medical problems in their backs and legs, but Horberg hasn't seemed to have developed that habit. He uses that technique sparingly and only as much as he needs. Another very good skill that Andreas has is his ability to read the oncoming players. Yes sometimes he misses but doesn't every goalie? His reaction times and judgements are almost always spot on. Horberg plays very cleanly and responsibly. One more thing that I like about Andreas when he is in the cage is his ability to let the pipes work with him instead of against him. He reminds me of Marc-Andre Fleury in the way that he respects them and if a puck is going to go wide, he lets the pipes take care of it. They are there for a reason! Good luck Andreas with Vaxjo and your future hockey career!

Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
