World Junior Championships:
Day 7  Quarter Finals and Relegation Round

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! This is finally the day when we have come to the start of the relegation rounds and the Quarter Finals. There were 5 games played as I had previously stated before, including the best of 3 relegation, and some of the scores ended up not what you would have expected. For example, Team USA will have no chance at winning gold this year because Russia eliminated them by 2 pts. The current gold medal champions will be no longer in the running. Hey they put up a heck of a fight though, leading the pack most of the preliminary rounds. What I also found interesting was that Norway beat Germany! They lost almost all of their games and then go and beat the Germans! Going in to the Semi-finals, Sweden will face Russia and Canada will face Finland. The final scores for the games were 3-5 Russia, 5-3 Finland, 4-1 Canada, 6-0 Sweden, and 3-0 Norway. Some major players will be showing up in the Semis such as Wennberg, Forsberg, and de la Rose for Sweden, Teravainen, Maenalanen, and Saros for  Finland, and Reinhart, Drouin, and Mantha for Canada. Hopefully we will see some really good hockey in the next couple of days between these 4 super powers as they face off for the ultimate prize. Without any further delays, here are the game reviews for the 2nd!

Game 1 - Germany vs. Norway

Even if Norway has ended up in relegation, they will fight Germany every step of the way. This was shown when they took a 1-0 lead in the 3 part relegation round at the Malmo Isstadion. When Germany's captain Leon Draisaitl received a second period misconduct for high sticking, the Norwegians knew exactly what to do. At 5:06, just 9 seconds after an slashing penalty, Martin Ronnild drew first blood for Norway when he shoved Ludvig Hoff's attempt into the cage. One minute later the lead went up 2-0 when Simon Nielsen backhanded an attempted goal to Didrik Svendsen who then slipped it past Marvin Cupper. Erlend Lesund penalized for an interference in Norway's zone for Team Norway but that was shortly lived for the Germans when Draisaitl was taken off for his high sticking at 7:57 left in the period. Taking this to their advantage as they should, Norway closed out the scoring for the game when Andreas Klavestad snapped a wicked wrister top shelf past Cupper at 13:42 to make it 3-0. Germany's Marvin Cupper made 21 out of 24 saves and it appears Joachim Svendsen made 7 out of 7 saves for the shut out. Germany and Norway will play again on the 3rd for game 2.

Game 2 - USA vs. Russia

Russia certainly got things rolling in these finals by beating the almost unbeatable Team USA 5-3. Unfortunately we won't see the Americans in the final round but they had a fantastic run while they were in Sweden. At 6:17 into the first period, Mikhail Grigorenko slapped a loose puck past Gillies.  2 and half minutes later, the Americans scored 1-1 when Brady Skjei pushed the goal into the Russian net but then Stefan Matteau was able to get it across the goal line. 21 seconds later Pavel Buchnevich was able to get his shot to ding off the post and fall behind Gillies at 9:11. Again, the Americans tied it 2-2 when Stefan Matteau assisted Ryan Hartman on a beautiful clapper past Vasilevski. At 16:51, Nic Kerdiles was able to beat Vasilevski when a blue line to blue line shot was passed to Kerdiles from Riley Barber and a very nice clapper sent it in. This would be the Americans first and last lead at 3-2. The first goal in the second period came at 13:15 and the next at 14:16 to give the Russians a 4-3 advantage. Anton Slepyshev and Nikita Zadorov recorded points. Pavel Buchnevich made it a sweet 5-3 win when he scored an empty net goal with 28.9 seconds left in the third. Russia will play Sweden on the 4th. Jon Gillies stopped 20 out of 25 shots for Team USA and Andrei Vasilevski stopped 30 out of 33 for Russia.

Game 3 - Finland vs. Czech Republic

This is Finland's year and they know it considering they beat the powerful Czech Republic 5-3 on the 2nd. The Finns are on a rampant race to bring home a medal after their only shot in 2006 with a bronze. The Finnish players opened the scoring at 4:54 into the first when Esa Lindell and Teuvo Teravainen assisted Saku Maenalanen on a goal past Langhamer. Just 45 seconds later, the Czechs had a response when Martin Prochazka and David Pastrnak rushed the puck down the ice to Dominik Simon who was able to get it in past Saros. At 11:07 in the second, the Czechs went up 2-1 when Jakub Vrana and Dominik Simon found Martin Prochazka ready at the Finnsih end. Then it was 3-1 when Radek Faksa made a shot on goal at 14:24 assisted by Vojtech Tomecek. Suomi made it 3-2 with 1:55 left in the period when Rasmus Kulmala had an unsuccessful shot on goal but then Juuso Ikonen backhanded it past Langhamer. At 5:56 in the third, the Finns tied everything up at 3's when Mikko Lehtonen's attempt was pushed in by Henri Ikonen. Saku Kinnunen made it 4-3 with a goal with 8:21 left in the third with apples for Juuso Ikonen and Rasmus Kulmala. Saku Maenalenen made it 5-3 at the end of the 60 minutes. Marek Langhamer saved 29 out of 34 goals for the Czechs and Juuse Saros saved 20 out of 23 for Team Finland. Finland will go on to play Canada on the 4th,

Game 4 - Canada vs. Switzerland

This was Canada's 20th straight win and now they are on the way to possibly medaling once again. Switzerland was unfortunately eliminated from any possible placement. After a tough first period, Canada was finally rewarded at 18:08 when recent returner Griffin Reinhart pushed the puck in past Melvin Nyffeler with an assist from captain Scott Laughton. At 9:04 in the second, Canada pushed things to 2-0 when Anthony Mantha was allowed a penalty shot after being brought down by Switzerland's Lukas Balmelli. With 4 seconds left on the clock, Switzerland scored their only goal on the game from the stick of Nico Dunner with assists from Kevin Fiala and Mirco Muller. Curtis Lazar made it 3-1 at 4:11. An apple was given to Griffin Reinhart. Derrick Pouliot made it 4-1 when shot a wrister past Nyffeler at 13:49. Canada stopped 19 out of 20 shots and Melvin Nyffeler saved 19 out of 23 shots total. Canada will play Finland on the 4th.

Game 5 - Sweden vs. Slovakia

Sweden shut out Slovakia to advance on in their hometown tournament and shut down any of Slovakia's thoughts or dreams of medaling. At 11:58 in the first period, Sweden drew first blood when Lucas Wallmark deked Slovakian tendy Richard Sabol. With 1:21 left in the first period, the score went up 2-0 when Elias Lindholm accepted a pass from Filip Forsberg and shot it past Sabol's left skate. At 1:10 in the second, captain Filip Forsberg lifted his team 3-0 with an incredible shot in the NHL style. Lucas Wallmark scored his second goal of the night and sent the score up to 4-0 with 6:39 remaining in the second period. Nick Sorensen picked up the assist. In the third, the two final goals surfaced for a final of 6-0. The first one was at 13:58 by Filip Forsberg and the last with 4:41 remaining from the stick of Jacob de la Rose. Oscar Dansk earned his first shut out of the World Juniors by stopping 18 out of 18 shots for Team Sweden. Richard Sabol stopped 34 out of 40 for Team Slovakia. Sweden will face off against Russia on the 4th.

Spotlight Player Emil Travergard       Biscuits and Breezers         Welcome back to another blog for Biscuits and Breezers! This is another post for the Spotlight Player series, and the player featured today, is a prime example of the defensive qualities that are capable in blue liners. Trending on an upward slope, this particular player brings fire to the ice as well as quite the chill. He may be an independent skater, but he is almost always his team's biggest supporter in the long run. The next Spotlight Player is Haninge Anchors defenseman Emil Travergard!     Emil Travergard - Haninge Anchors (D)   Height: 6 ft 2 in  Weight:  215 lbs Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden 2013-2014 Stats: 1 goal in 23 games played, 3 assists, 4 TPs, and 14 PIMs with Hammarby J20         While watching Travergard on the ice during his stay in the WSHL, he certainly brought a spar...
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost alway...
#32   Biscuits and Breezers          Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will talk about the Oilers' team regrowth and Wild prospect Mario Lucia breaking his leg. Starting off with the Edmonton Oilers. I have recently talked about Taylor Hall's signing and now we have another. This time it's Jordan Eberle's turn. He was just inked to a 6 year $36 million contract extension on Tuesday. With one year left on his entry level contract, this extension will keep him as the new youthful generation of players until the 2018-2019 season. Hopefully with Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, they can produce a team almost as good as in the Gretzky era. Just give them a few years and maybe they will rise up and become a main threat again. We will see! Good luck Jordan with the new contract! I am quite excited to see the upcoming team.     Next thing we will talk about is Ma...
