Biscuits and Breezers
Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be talking about Patrick Kane headed to Switzerland as this lockout endures and my AWHL team, the Missoula Maulers, and there 13-1 game this week. Starting off with Kane. As the lockout continues to drag on, players are just giving up and heading to Europe basically for the remainder of what is left of an abandoned cause. The lockout has gotten so bad that players, especially in the KHL, are debating to go back to the States even after the lockout ends. Anyway, this is Patrick Kane's turn in the spotlight this time. For a good reason this time I might point out. The Chicago Blackhawks' main forward has now signed with the EHC Biel in the Swiss League. Kane will be the fifth Blackhawk going to Europe proceeding Viktor Stalberg, Bryan Bickell, Michal Rozsival, and Michael Frolik. The only reason I say that this is a good reason Patrick is in the news is because well, we all know that he hasn't had the best of luck with the press. Well disregarding all of that, best of luck to you Patrick!
Next we move onto my AWHL team pick. On the 25th, the Maulers went up against the Bozeman Icedogs. By the end of that game, the dogs were trying to scramble to gain just one point from a THIRTEEN point lead. There was an amazing effort from both teams, but in the end Bozeman just didn't have it in them to pull ahead. One player that really took the game personally was Maulers forward Zach Paisley. After being out for a shoulder injury, Paisley is bringing the heat and packing a punch. With 11 goals and 3 assists in his last four games played, he has a total of 14 points and is just shy of being top scorer in the league. This kid is amazing. A comeback of this nature is very rare to see outside the NHL. He is a brilliant player and you can see that when you watch him. Two more players that added goals were Gabe Whiteman-Jones and Paige Stensgar-Maul. With two goals added from each, they are sweeping the competition. Missoula outshot Bozeman 63-13and McKinlee Baum saved 12 out of 13 shots in the net. In the end, the Maulers had goals from Zach Paisley, Gabe Whiteman-Jones, Brett Mathews, Michael Cummings, Jordan Wheatly, and Dustin Pierce. There were assists from Viktor Steenson, Michael Cummings, Tyler Zandhuisen, Dustin Pierce, Brett Mathews, Gabe Whiteman-Jones, Paige Stensgar-Maul, Donovan Mattfeldt, Joey Sundgren, Anders Nord, Connor McNally, and Matt Chamberlain. I am very proud of how these boys are doing and hopefully they can keep this winning streak up. If you haven't seen them or have and want to again, the next game is on the 2nd of November and it is against the Great Falls Americans so come out and see them!
Now we have the "Players of Today". For the Prospect pick we have Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan Mackinnon. For the NHL player we have Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Sharp. For the European player we have TPS U20 Jr. A SM-liiga right wing Artturi Lehkonen.
Starting off with the prospect pick. Nathan is 5ft. 11in, 179lbs, and is from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada. In the 2011-2012 season he had 31 goals in 58 games played, 47 assists, 78 TPs, 45 PIMs, and a +/- of 11. He is playing the 2012-2013 season again with the Halifax Mooseheads in the QMJHL. Nathan is one of the top prospects for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He is supposedly coined as the "Next coming of Sidney Crosby". Nathan might be the next best hockey player to come out of Nova Scotia. He has everything an NHL team could want. Of course he has the great goal scoring capabilities and the soft as butter hands, but he also has strategy, technique, and the mind set to go all the way. The Mooseheads are very fortunate to have him on their roster and Nathan will definitely make a huge impact on the NHL Entry Draft. MacKinnon can make a goal out of a shift that has gone sour or play that has turned. Nathan is ready to go into the NHL and he is ready to go now. Good luck Nathan with the Mooseheads and your future hockey career!
Next we have the NHL pick. Patrick is 6ft. 1in, 199lbs, and is from Thunder Bay, Ontario. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 33 goals in 74 games played, 36 assists, 69 TPs, a +/- of 28, 38 PIMs, 7 power play goals, 10 power play assists, 1 shorthanded goal, 0 shorthanded assists, 8 game winning goals, 282 shots on goal, and a shot percentage of .117. Patrick was drafted 3rd round 95th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. He plays the game on every inch of ice and likes to have control of the puck at all times. Sharp flicks the puck around with great skill and accuracy, always on target. Good luck Patrick with the Blackhawks and your future NHL career!
Last but not least, we have the European pick. Artturi is 5ft. 10in, 152lbs, and is from Piikkio, Finland. In the 2011-2012 season Artturi had 28 goals in 40 games played, 26 assists, 54 TPs, 54 PIMs, and a +/- of 22. He will be playing for KalPa SM-liiga team this season. I love the way this kid plays. Its continuous shift, after shift, after shift, after shift. He seems to never stop. Artturi's stamina and persistence are off the charts. It is unbelievable to watch him play. The best part is that he takes the game as a "glass half full" player. Artturi takes note of what he did wrong, learns from it, and basically takes it as a learning lesson. Good luck Artturi with the SM-liiga teams and your future hockey career!
