Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this episode I would like to talk about an update from the Missoula Maulers and Helena Bighorns in the AWHL and I am going to review the first NHL games of the season! The games I have picked out of many to review are the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers "Battle for Pennsylvania" game and the St. Louis Blues vs. Detroit Red Wings games. Well first off let me congratulate Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks for scoring the first goal of the 2013 season! Many rookies finally played their first NHL games and many showed what they had to prove. I am only reviewing two games because to review all 13 games would be very difficult to do and very time consuming. Now, I am not complaining one bit I am just explaining. But, before I get to that I have to talk about my partner teams for a moment. The Missoula Maulers won against the Great Falls Americans 5-2 recently. There were goals from Joey Sundgren, Cody Ogrin, Anders Nord, Jordan Wheatly, and Paige Maul. Cody Janzen played very well and so did the newcomers. Yes along with Niko Pukkila being taken on by the Maulers mid-season, there are 3 new boys in the zoo. Defenseman Christian Manning, Forward Tyler Cosentino, and returning veteran Will Stawinski. All the right moves at all the right times is what helped the Maulers ditch their losing streak and leave it in the dust. Also sweat, grit, and hard core determination. I am very proud of these boys because they showed they can all come together, leave behind all their differences, and actually make a functional team. Maybe they are going on a championship turn around. I would still like to see more from them because I know these players personally and I know their individual skills. They just haven't fully come out yet. But I know that eventually they will and then they will be like the team they were last season. A family. Zach Paisley and Viktor Steenson have exploded with their points. I think that between the two of them in just three games they have over 10 points combined. They are probably the key players and driving force of the team right now. Anyway great 5-2 win and 3-0 win today on home ice. I am glad that they are getting more defenseman in their line up because that was definitely one of their weak points. Donovan Mattfeldt proved his ground by certainly being their top defenseman and he still is. Work and win boys. Next game I hope everyone on the ice is working ten times harder than the guy you are facing off against because the next team is the Yellowstone Quake in the second place spot. From here on out it gets more and more serious. You may have won a couple but that can get taken away as easily as it was given to you. Remember that. See you on the 25th boys!

Now we can talk about the Helena Bighorns. This team has impressed me for two years straight with their level of playing just as the Maulers have. The most recent game I going to talk about is the defeat over the Billings Bulls 4-1. See now this is a fully functional team who knows what's good for them and puts 110% effort out when they play and that is why ladies and gentlemen they are 31-1-1. Fantastic. The players put the fans before themselves and give them a good show every night in the barn. They lay everything out on the ice and basically crush the opposing team. Intense playing and an athletic winning attitude is why they win as much as they do. With Jett Salinas of course being a brick wall in the net. But that is another story for another time. Starting things off, Kyle Baker scored. Then he scored again at 13:04 in the first with an assist from "Super Swede" Christian Axelsson to make it 2-1 in favor for the Bighorns after Billings had scored one past Jett Salinas. Nic Wackerly saved 65 out of 69 shots on goal in total throughout the entire game. Corbin Belling then scored for the Bighorns to make it 3-1. There were assists from Brandon Rumble, Wyatt Winfield, and Logan Henne. Nik Nasby scored the only goal for the Bulls 5:44 into the first period with an assist from Luke Bing. I don't know unfortunately who scored the last goal for the Bighorns. Well, the last score of the game was 4-1 as we know. Helena was excellent on the power play kills and really defended their zone. Even though Billings really pushed and stressed Jett in the net, he prevailed and only let one in. The Bulls were very persistent which you have to give them props for. Well great game Helena and let's go get another win!

Here comes the NHL reviews! I think we shall start off with the.....Penguins vs, Flyers game! If you have been with Biscuits and Breezers for at least some time you would know that I am a huge Penguins fan so this game was pretty exciting for me.  Not just because it was the first game of the NHL season but because of the massive rivalry. Especially now that Claude Giroux is the new captain for the Philadelphia Flyers. In my mind this seems to have escalated the hostility between the in state rivals. I am really excited because this is the first NHL game review since June I think? Anyway lets get on with it! The Penguins struck first at 4:40 in the first to start off the game on the right foot. There assists from Matt Niskanen and Brandon Sutter on a power play. James Neal then started his massive scoring streak when he scored on Bryzgalov at 7:20 in the first with an assist from Evgeni "Geno" Malkin himself. New captain Claude Giroux then scored to start off the second period on Flower at only 23 seconds in. He had an assist from Scott Hartnell and Brayden Schenn. Then to expand their win even more Chris Kunitz scored at 19:48 in the third with an assist from Paul Martin. I really liked to watch this game because it shows which players are up and running and which ones are still rusty from not playing or practicing over the lockout. There weren't as many penalties as I thought there would be. I definitely thought there was going to be some beast fight between these two teams like there was in the playoffs. But there wasn't unfortunately. Maybe next game against the Flyers there will be. I hope so!

Next, we have the Blues vs. Red Wings game. Man, the Wings got shredded in this game. The final score was 6-0. This was the first shut out of the 2013 season. The first of two goals in the first period came at 6:36 from the stick of Vladimir Tarasenko with assists from Ian Cole and Alexander Steen. The second goal came at 14:44 from Chris Stewart on a power play. The assists were from Andy McDonald and again Alexander Steen. Wow, looking at the games stats, the Blues really spaced out their goals having two in each period. That's kind of nifty I think. Anyway the third goal was from Vladimir Tarasenko at 29 seconds in making this his second goal of the game which I might add was on a power play. The assist came from Kevin Shattenkirk. Then the fourth goal of the game came from one of my personal favorite players T.J. Oshie. It was shorthanded and came at 16:09. His assists were from Alex Pietrangelo and David Backes. In the third period, Chris Stewart found the back of the net for his second goal of the game again on a power play at 1:15 in. His assists were from Kevin Shattenkirk and T.J. Oshie. At 14:35, Patrik Berglund scored on a power play to seal the final score of the game and the win for St. Louis. He had help from T.J. Oshie and Alex Pietrangelo. Man, the Blues were major penalty killers in this game and I think that is why they won this game. I know this is the first game of the season but it makes you take a second and think, is Henrik Zetterberg the right captain for the Detroit Red Wings? In my personal opinion, I think that Pavel Datsyuk should have been chosen for the "C". I guess that wasn't my personal decision though. I am very happy with the out come of this game and I hope the Blues can continue on a winning streak like this!

Now, we can move onto the "Players of Today" segment of our blog. For the Prospect player we have Team USA and Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones. For the junior player we have Halifax Mooseheads right wing Ryan Falkenham. Then for the European player we have Almaz Cherepovets forward Pavel Buchnevich.

Here, we have the prospect pick. Seth is 6 ft 3 in, 201 lbs, and is from Plano, Texas, USA. In the 2011-2012 season with the USNTDP (United States National Team Develeopment Program) team in the USHL, he had 4 goals in 20 games played, 8 assists. 12 TPs, and 6 PIMs. He was one of the most prominent members of the 2013 USA J20 Team at the IIHF WJC this year. He is a very good defenseman that shows great skill going into the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Seth is expected to go first overall. Jones definitely shows the public how defenseman aren't just watching the blue line anymore. Oh no, they are going into offense and are scoring goals and racking up some major points. He definitely is a model for the younger kids just becoming defenseman. I might as well add a "great job" to Seth for his performance in Russia! Congrats on the gold! Anyway, Good luck Seth with the NHL Entry Draft, USHL, and the rest of your future hockey career!

Now it is time for the junior player. Ryan is 5 ft 10 in, 179 lbs, and is from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 7 games in 53 games played, 5 assists, 12 TPs, 4 PIMs, and a +/- of 6. He is a very resourceful right wing with good on ice vision, quick skates, and good puck control. He tends to defend his puck when his team mates have it. It is funny how forwards like Ryan do the work the forwards need to do, but they also defend and take care of their team mates. Even though he isn't a big scorer like the rest of his team mates for example Nathan MacKinnon, they still have qualities to contribute to the team. Even though they might not have the best stats, sometimes they can have the best personalities. These players are your fourth line grinders and goons. Raising morale in the locker room and getting everyone ready for the battle out on the ice. Good luck Ryan with the Mooseheads and your future hockey career!

Last but not least we have the European player. Pavel is 6 ft 0 in, 157 lbs, and is from Cherepovets, Russia. He had 15 goals in 45 games played, 29 assists, 44 TPs, 55 PIMs, and +/- of 15. Obviously, you can tell that he is a skilled forward with a lot of potential. Pavel is definitely a huge presence on and off the ice. He uses intimidation and force to drive the biscuits his way and to tuck it neatly top cheese. It is almost like beating goaltenders is his thing. Pavel also seems to support his team mates as much as he can. That proves why he has so many more assists than goals. I love the way he plays too. He plays like a much bigger player than he really is but he also supports the "little guys" on the team. This good for his stats, public status, and in the coaches eyes. Playing like this gets you more ice time, easier going with the boys on your team, and as I said a happy vote with the public. Good luck Pavel with Cherepovets and your future hockey career!

Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
