Biscuits and Breezers

Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! In this blog we will be talking about the impending lockout and Shane Doan's final decision in where to sign. Starting off with some bad news unfortunately. Coming this Sunday, there could be no NHL season. The league will officially lockout at midnight on Saturday if no deal is reached. That is when the old collective bargaining agreement expires. A press conference was held on Thursday this week and things are not looking good. Sidney Crosby, captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins and image of the NHL, basically said that the players are willing to give up a lot just to play but the league is just not addressing the issues that they, as the whole players of the NHL, feel are important issues that need to be looked at. Especially that the league is not looking at the players as individuals. They are looking at them like property or cattle. That is how I see it. The owners are the ranchers and the players are being round up like cows. I can understand where they are coming from, being angry that they (players) are not getting their fair share in these deals. Now both sides are talking but, unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there is an agreement in sight. Everyone has already been assigned to their respective leagues if the season does lockout tomorrow and that quite frankly is making me very nervous. I really want to see Sid and Geno play this year, but not somewhere else besides Pittsburgh. I really hope that they don't lockout tomorrow. If it does though, I might have to watch the KHL this season for Sidney and Evgeni. Well at least that is where he is expected to go. If he does, the KHL will definitely benefit from his skills. Good luck everyone! Cross your fingers and lets hope things go our way!

Now we shall talk about Shane Doan. It was very unexpected to where he was going to ink his name. Well now it was decided. The Coyotes' captain will stay in Phoenix. One of the most sought after players in the free agency this season, Doan made a very difficult and time-concerning decision considering that the franchise's ownership was up in the air for most of this year. This was definitely a major factor in where Doan decided to go. Anyway, his 4 year $21.2 million contract should suffice enough for him for awhile. Also to keep the Coyotes happy. Having the same captain back will be good for the team because if he left and they had a new one, I definitely don't think that they could make a playoff run like they did this year. Well good luck with the new contract and with the team!

Now for the "Players of Today"! For the NHL player we have Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene. For the goalie pick we have Vancouver Canucks net minder Roberto Luongo. For the European pick we have NA3HL and Nacka HK J20 player Victor Gortz.

Matt Duchene is 5ft. 11in, 200lbs, and is from Haliburton, Ontario, Canada. He was drafted 1st round 3rd overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by Colorado. In the 2011-2012 season, Matt had 14 goals in 58 games played, 14 assists, 28 TPs, a +/- of -11, 8 PIMs, 5 power play goals, 0 shorthanded goals, 2 game winning goals, 132 shots on goal, and a 10.6 S%. He has great hands for such a young player and is very intimidating on the ice. Matt is a very good partner in the rink with Gabriel Landeskog, I think. He will is supposed to be playing with the Avalanche for the 2012-2013 season. I don't know about that anymore. Good luck Matt with the Avalanche and your future NHL career!

Next we have the goalie pick. Roberto Luongo is 6ft. 3in, 217lbs, and is from Montral, Quebec, Canada. He was acquired by the Canucks from Florida with Lukas Krajicek and a sixth round draft pick in 2006 in exchange for Bryan Allen, Alex Auld, and Todd Bertuzzi on June 23rd, 2006. He was drafted 1st round 4th overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 31 wins in 55 games played 14 loses, 8 overtime loses, 127 goals against, 1,577 shots against, 1,450 saves, .919 save percentage, 2.41 goals against average, 5 shut outs, 4 PIMs, and 3,162 minutes played. Much to his dismay, Roberto will be a Canuck for the 2012-2013 season. He was very much deciding that his time being a Canuck was over, but after free agency, he is very glad that he still has a team. A new song for a new day I guess. Well he is very good in the cage with great glove catches and amazing butterflies. Good Luck Roberto with the Canucks and your future NHL career!

Lastly, we have the European pick. Victor is 6ft. 5in, 185lbs, and is from Nacka, Sweden. In the 2011-2012 season, he had 9 goals in 24 games played, 14 assists, 23 TPs, 6 PIMs, and a +/- of 7. In the 2012-2013 season he will be playing with the St. Louis Jr. Blues in the NA3HL. He is a very good right wing with great timings on the ice and is a great team mate to the other boys on the team. Really seems to get along with everyone on the team and fills in spots that need to be filled. Great addition to any team and he really has sharp skills for a young player. I am very impressed with his chemistry on the ice and his determination! Good luck Victor with the Jr. Blues and your future hockey career!!

Fight of the Year Biscuits and Breezers        Before I move on to anymore news, I wanted to feature a fight that I think should be up for a fight of the year in the WSHL. This scrap was between a beast from Missoula and a goon from Seattle. That's right Austin Azzinnaro and Piers LaFrance battled it out in Missoula's last home game and it was amazing. You should have seen these two go at it! It was a complete yard sale of mitts, twigs, and buckets, and by the time Auzzie was done with the Totem, LaFrance was thrown out of the rink looking like he had just met Ross "The Boss" Rhea from Goon. Azzinnaro was ejected in pure beauty style; waving to the roaring fans, excited as can be, and pumped for another round. It was an absolutely incredible fight and I have never seen a junior fight go down as sweet as that one did. Not to mention this was Austin's first tilly! He is a born fighter and obviously it comes by him naturally because the skills he ha
Jamie Zaleski Biscuits and Breezers    Welcome back to another blog of Biscuits and Breezers! Today you will be able to meet and get to know FHL Danville Dashers center Jamie Zaleski a little bit better. You don't come across a player very often that is so passionate about the sport that he takes immense pride in every game he plays or every time he represents his team, but today I believe I was able to talk to one of those chosen few. Jamie is an amazing player who beams passion and talent every time he walks onto the ice for a game and when you see him play, I guarantee that by the end of the game you will be as stunned as I was when I first watched a Dashers game. Zaleski is the perfect player seeing that he has the ideal combinations of aggressive and physical plays, speed, and can score whenever it needs be. I have seen some pretty aggressive players in my time but Jamie Zaleski is the definition of aggression out on the ice. His hits are almost always cle
